Democrats are feeling bullish about their chances to win a Senate seat in Georgia in the wake of GOP Sen. Johnny Isakson’s decision to retire.
The announcement, Democrats argue, gives them a golden opportunity to expand the Senate battleground map heading into 2020 and chip away at the GOP’s Senate firewall.
Nikema Williams, the chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia, immediately pledged that the state would be a must-watch “battleground” in 2020, saying in the wake of Isakson’s announcement that it “has never been clearer that the path for Democratic victory runs through Georgia.”
Georgia has typically been a safe Republican state, but Democrats made gains in the House races in 2018 when Rep. Lucy McBath (D) defeated GOP Rep. Karen Handel in the state’s sixth congressional district. The party also came close to winning the governorship when Stacey Abrams lost in a close race to Republican Gov. Brian Kemp.
Other planets may also be aligning for Democrats in Georgia.
The party believes the state’s demographics are moving in its direction, and President Trump’s low approval ratings have Democrats thinking he may leave other Republicans vulnerable.
Trump defeated Democratic Hillary Clinton by 5 percentage points in 2016, but only won a little more than 50 percent of the vote. That’s given Democrats new hope of winning the state in the presidential race.
Even if that dream doesn’t come true for the party, Democrats like their chances of winning the open Senate seat in a year when Trump will be at the top of the ticket and Georgia Republicans will also be defending GOP Sen. David Perdue’s seat.
J.B. Poersch — the president of the Senate Majority PAC, an outside group aligned with Senate Democrats — said the open Senate race “increases our chances of retaking the majority.”

McBath did not defeat Handel. Handel defeated Handel. The only way this senate seat could POSSIBLY go Rat, is for the GOP to hand it to the enemy on a silver platter.
In Isakson’s case, it’s illness.

And McBath didn’t even live in the state. But, that district has undergone quite a bit of change over the years, anyway. It has some of the better schools in Georgia, so lots of Northern Democrats have moved down and called that place home. Of course, it’s a fairly affluent area where the rich liberal, Democrats dare not live with the consequences of the policies they so ardently support and push. They make the people of Norcross, Doraville, Lilburn and Lawrenceville deal with all of that.
Nice if somebody who is politically savvy this area to put some real information up on this thread. What is the real situation?
We’re well into the 2020 campaign and the GA Dems have not named an opponent to Sen. David Perdue. Now they have to come up with another Senate candidate.
I’m in GA and can’t think of a well known Dem who could be the Senate candidate. GA Dems were having trouble finding one candidate, now they have to find two candidates. Stacey was their last and best hope.
I read last night on FR that the Republican governor appoints someone to fill the remainder of Isaakson’s term which expires in 2022 so this article appears to be more farting in the wind from The Hill.
Maybe Stacey Abrams will run, well, waddle....

I believe that's incorrect. Whoever gets appointed serves until the next general election.
Well, as Roy Moore proved in 2017, any open seat is a chance for a Democrat to win. But still, with Trump on the ballot in 2020, it might not be as easy a pickup as the Dems may be thinking.
The GA governor appoints a replacement for Isaackson, but an election will be held in 2020. David Perdue is also up for re-election. Two GA Senate elections in 2020.

The Dem party in GA is majority black. I’d be surprised to see them nominate a white candidate.
Isakson needed to retire. Various ailments, including Parkinson’s have really slowed himi down. HE’s a good guy, buy CLEARLY part of the RINO-swamp crowd. About 75% Republican.
In GA our governor gets to appoint someone to fill out the entire term, and then have a per-usual general election.
The Dems want to feature Stacey Abrams, who is remarkably unlikable, but does attract certain political one-issue voters.
We should be good, but EVERY (R) voter needs to cast their vote, *AND* we need good election oversight, which should happen given our new laws, new machines and a good Secretary of State.
That’s true. Per our state constitution, the Guv will fill the seat. Then we have a regular general election with a known incumbent in place.
Fixed it.
