I read last night on FR that the Republican governor appoints someone to fill the remainder of Isaakson’s term which expires in 2022 so this article appears to be more farting in the wind from The Hill.
I believe that's incorrect. Whoever gets appointed serves until the next general election.
The GA governor appoints a replacement for Isaackson, but an election will be held in 2020. David Perdue is also up for re-election. Two GA Senate elections in 2020.
That’s true. Per our state constitution, the Guv will fill the seat. Then we have a regular general election with a known incumbent in place.
That information is incorrect. Georgia law states:
Any vacancy occurring in the representation of the state in the Senate of the United States shall be filled for the unexpired term by the vote of the electors of the state at a special election to be held at the time of the next November election, occurring at least 40 days after the occurrence of such vacancy. Until such time as the vacancy shall be filled by an election, the Governor may make a temporary appointment to fill the vacancy.
O.C.G.A. § 21-2-542
In this case, the special election will occur in Nov, 2020 for the remaining two years of the six year term. The Governor will appoint a replacement for the period from 1 Jan 2020 until the General election.
