Two-thirds of Republicans support 'red flag' gun laws: Poll
The Hill ^ | 8/20/19 | JOHN BOWDEN

More than two-thirds of Republican-leaning adults say in a new poll that they support so-called red flag laws that allow family members to petition a court for temporary restrictions on a person's right to own a firearm.

A poll released Tuesday found that 70 percent of Republicans surveyed support such legislation, as do 67 percent of gun owners.

Support for such legislation drops, however, when it is expanded to allow members of law enforcement to petition a court without a family member filing a claim.

In that case, 66 percent of Republicans support allowing police officers to petition a court to take away a citizen's firearms, while 60 percent of gun owners said the same. Nearly 80 percent of Democrats support red flag laws that extend to law enforcement, while 85 percent of Democrats support the basic version of the laws.

In all, 77 percent of the public supports family-initiated orders, while 70 percent back police-initiated ones, according to the poll.

Support for the legislation was polled just before two deadly mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, which thrust gun control back into the national spotlight. President Trump reportedly supports the idea of passing red flag legislation at the national level, which Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) vowed to do in a bill with the president's backing earlier this month.

Graham's legislation would create a federal grant program for law enforcement to help states pass their own red flag laws.

“These grants will be given to law enforcement so they can hire and consult with mental health professionals to better determine which cases need to be acted upon. This grant program also requires robust due process and judicial review. It does allow for quick action," Graham said in a statement.

APM Research's survey contacted 1,000 American adults between July 16 and 21. The poll's margin of error is 3.5 percentage points.

> Support for the legislation was polled just before two deadly mass shootings

How would anyone reasonably think to run a poll on a topic like this immediately before events occur that cause gun grabbers to push these very bills?

There’s a zero chance this is a true, unbiased poll. This is gasoline on the fire of theories suggesting such violence is coordinated or controlled by statists.

one phone call by someone who is mad at you or a spouse that is planning to tell the other one that they are getting a divorce and the cops show up and take your guns and ammo or it you resist you could get killed maybe along with some police officers. This is a big club in the hands of EVERY person.... The report may not need to come from someone in America..... It will be misused. How many gun collections will be taken and will be called a stash of weapons. I anticipate a lot of boating accidents and a lot of junk metal being buried in the back 40. Metal detector operators and diggers get tired after a while.

No need for "red flag" laws.If a person is unstable enough to be denied access to a firearm then he's unstable enough to be involuntarily committed to a psychiatric facility.

Every state in the nation has specific, detailed laws and procedures to do so.

Please know this about poll taking and those who administer the poll:

Since the conversation is not recorded, there is simply no way to verify that the answer that was given was what was recorded. Further, there is no way to validate that the person calling actually made contact with someone. Their system annotates the number of successful contacts (i.e. when a call is answered) but these include voice mailboxes and answering machines. That is the only thing recorded. So if your answering machine picks up to say that you are not there, the pollster can provide whatever response that they desire.

It’s behind a WSJ paywall but there’s a new survey out there showing traditional American values are quickly fading away.

Particularly drastic is the change in values among young people. It truly is Misshun Akomplushd for the Publik Skrool Sistem.

I was just thinking that.

Also, if someone wants to go on a rampage, even on Staten Island, where you can’t just purchase one like groceries, EVERYONE knows where to get them.

It’s not even a well kept secret where to get them.

And just handguns? Nope. Barbershop here was selling Israeli machine guns.

They got busted but someone else is always willing to pick up the slack.

Especially after the relatively light sentence he got.

I wish the Poll would have identified the ages of those in the poll. You can bet the snowflakes were well represented.

What’s next, if you don’t cry and wail sufficiently when a Democrat Politician Dies, you will be hauled before The Red Flag Court of Justice?

I would imagine the ‘jackpot’ question of the pole went something like.

“Lets say your Uncle Jim got drunk, beat up his wife and kids, went to another relatives house and beat up the husband and wife and called to tell you he was on the way to deal with YOUR family”

WOULD YOU
A. Call Uncle Jim and try to reason with him?
B. Send Uncle Jim to his room for a time out?
C. Ignore the whole situation?
D. Hope for a system like the Red Flag Law so LEO could be called and ALL his guns confiscated so he is unable to come to your house and execute your family?”

...

Also notice these ‘Hate does not live here’ sprouting up on front lawns in the area.

I snicker and am tempted to knock on the door and ask their opinion of PDJT....if favorable, I will ask their opinion of BO.

I am fairly well certain I will get a HATE message flung at one or both, thereby negating and rendering useless the feel good sign.

Sorry, but mental health policy and its failings is NOT just the fault of “Democrats”... and its that kind of crap that is why it continues....

Wake the hell up, BOTH parties have failed this nation, particularly when it comes to mental health policies.

Democrats with their overly liberal desires to deinstitutionalize in misguided compassion and republicans for their stupid belief that pills can solve anything and you can empty the institutions just to save money..

Both parties own this mess!! IF you think otherwise you are blinded by partisan propaganda.

The number of people institutionalized today is at or lower than it was in the 1950s even though the population is nearly 3 times the size!

This isn’t one party screwing up, its the BOTH... Voters, unless they have a relative who is mentally ill, don’t care about mental health policy, so guess where money and services are cut??? Why? Because NO ONE CARES... Until of course they have to come face to face with the mess they create.. which is still small, but keeps growing every year.

THE MENTAL HEALTH POLICY IN THE US IS A DISGRACE, PERIOD... AND BOTH PARTIES AND THE VOTERS ARE TO BLAME!!!!

...support ‘red flag’ gun laws...

Useless poll. Each person, when answering the poll, is using their own definition of “red flag gun laws” when they answered.

It’s the genius of Obama offering “hope and change”. A white guy that hates Hispanics can interpret it to mean the change is to get rid of Hispanics, while the Hispanic guy can interpret it to mean change is to get rid of whites. So they both vote for him.

A more reasonable poll would be to describe a PARTICULAR “red flag” law and then ask people if they are in favor of it. But even that is questionable because they are making a snap decision based on how, on the surface, something sounds like it could be a good idea.

Completely made up poll. This poll is nonsense, don’t believe it. There is a huge effort to get the President to sign any gun control law especially red flag laws.

********

Agreed.
