The far-right populist leader initially dismissed the hundreds of blazes and then questioned whether activist groups might have started the fires in an effort to damage the credibility of his government, which has called for looser environmental regulations in the world

Hurrah for Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has insulted adversaries and allies, disparaged women, blacks and homosexuals, and even praised his country’s 1964-1985 dictatorship. Yet nothing has rallied more anger at home and criticism from abroad than his response to fires raging in parts of the Amazon region.

This article is incredibly propaganda-thick. Practically every word is chosen for propaganda effect. If I were teaching a course on propaganda I would use this article as an exercise in how to do the most thorough job possible.

Yes, exactly. Pure propaganda.

And what is it aimed at? Propping up globalism and discrediting President Bolsonaro, because he is a proud nationalist.

“The government created a sense of impunity among farmers who were willing to commit illegal acts to deforest,” he said.

Why do you suppose farmers would do such a thing?

A handful of people on different continents constitute a "global outrage"?

Were there never any fires in the Amazon before Brazil had a Conservative (Far Right according to the Media) President?

It is “illegal” for this country to open up land for farming and development in their own country. Think about that while citizens of many European countries and the US are forced to suffer & accept mass numbers of third world denizens, because they are poor and hungry.

Brazil must accept the role of beggar, subsisting on handouts from their benevolent betters, how long before Brazilians leave to seek a better future?

How long before Brazilians are rebranded as “migrants” as they are moved around like chess pieces ?

“and then questioned whether activist groups might have started the fires in an effort to damage the credibility of his government”

Would activists do this? Commit the very thing they try to prevent to make a point? You can bet on it. Mass shootings come to mind.

I bet some of the fires were deliberately started and then there is some normal fire started by a lightening strike. Is the Amazon being managed by a forest service that clears out brush so fires don’t spread quickly? Land management is an applied science. People screaming and accusing is unlikely to help.

I just read that phytoplankton (diatoms) are responsible for 20% of the oxygen in our atmosphere. So the rainforest isn’t as responsible for oxygen as the greenie weenies want us to think.

Actually I was wrong. It’s closer to 80% of the oxygen in our atmosphere.

The Amazon has a wet season and a dry season. Keep in mind the Amazon rain forest is along the Equator. It is for the most part a vast jungle about 2/3 the size of the lower 48 states. It is a huge area. We have a hard time keeping in check fires that happen just in northern California because of bad forest management.

There are areas where there is ONE fire fighter overseeing an area the size of Montana or even larger. They can’t possibly put out all the fires. Also, these fires have been happening there for thousands of years. Yes, some are started by ranchers trying to clear land for cattle. Most happen naturally because of lightning strikes.

This is just the latest story the main stream media will try to blame on global warming/climate change. It is like the fact that EVERY morning Good Morning America starts off with EXTREME WEATHER somewhere in the US. Like a thunderstorm in the middle of the summer is something new.
They can’t wait to blame Trump for the next hurricane.

What we need is for a Great White shark to bite somebody on the coast of Cape Cod. Then that will captivate the news cycle until everyone is afraid to go in the ocean above their ankles again.

That 70% of the planet is covered by WATER, your point becomes more of a ‘DUH’ statement

But, it’s like pointing out the big, burning ball of gas in the sky does more/most/all of the ‘climate change’ on this planet than the ‘evil’ CO2 ever would....

Typical (indoctrinated\Leftist) response: *deer in headlights*
