Putting on its Victorian gentleman suit (pace Tom Wolfe), the Washington Post's editorial board tut-tuts a rich part of Washington, D.C. and its political patrons, for pulling out all stops to prevent construction of a child-migrant shelter in its fancy environs.
MANY AMERICANS are rightly outraged by the Trump administration’s treatment of migrant children, who have been separated from parents and ill-treated by authorities. Democrats have been understandably eager to distance themselves from such policies — a stance that can result in knee-jerk opposition even to sensible practices in effect during the Obama administration.
That might explain the nearly uniform outcry from Washington-area politicians incensed at federal plans to build new shelters for migrant children in Northern Virginia and the District . The shelters, state-licensed and similar to scores across the county in operation since before President Trump took office, would help move migrant children out of squalid, cramped Border Patrol stations near the U.S.-Mexico border. They would provide a way station for unaccompanied minors while federal officials seek to place them with U.S.-based relatives or foster families.
But local politicians, nearly all Democrats, have balked at cooperating with federal authorities on any immigration matter. They have denounced the proposed new shelters with objections that smack of NIMBYism masquerading as humane concern for children. This month, the administration of D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) enacted emergency rules that blocked a planned federal shelter.
Just some misplaced never-Trumpism, maybe with a whiff of NIMBYism?

Why go to their neighborhoods? Put them in their homes.
Its only fair they should bear the burden. Its a shame they arent doing their share.
Anchor an old aircraft carrier 10 miles at sea. And set up tent cities on the main deck ...
Exactly. They arent even the ones who should be complaining. They get their minimum wage gardeners and domestic servants. Its the poor who should be complaining.
Good for thee but not for me.
I don't know where such shelters should be located, but I suspect part of the problem is size. 200 beds is a big facility. It's big enough to spook people in residential neighborhoods. Smaller and scattered site are probably better strategies.
The good people of Takoma have reason to push back. Takoma is a middle class neighborhood with some sketchy patches in a quadrant of the city that, like so much of DC, is now starting to improve. Takoma residents don't want to be used as a dumping ground. Break the project up into smaller pieces and put homes in AU Park, Spring Valley, Kalorama, Bethesda and Chevy Chase if you want to share the burden with wealthy neighborhoods.
Cue Gomer...
"SurPRISE...SURprise!"
.
Luxury tent cities in their massive estate yards.
Halfway houses for M13 members would be nice too... maybe 5 or 6 homes with 80 ‘young men’ each. I mean these ‘boys’ aren’t animal... according to Pelosi. Right?
“MANY AMERICANS are rightly outraged by the Trump administration’s treatment of migrant children, who have been separated from parents and ill-treated by authorities.”
NOPE. They’re not. They’re being lied to by entities such as Washington Poo.
“a stance that can result in knee-jerk opposition even to sensible practices in effect during the Obama administration”
NOPE. Strike two.
“That might explain the nearly uniform outcry from Washington-area politicians incensed at federal plans to build new shelters for migrant children in Northern Virginia and the District.”
NOPE. Strike three. Thanks for playing.
No excuses. Liberals are the real racists. And their hypocrisy on this issue is blatant.

I agree with your assessment of the economic status of the majority of residents in Takoma park, but anyone I have known who lived there was very liberal and displayed all the appropriate bumper stickers on their green vehicles (unless their sole mode of transportation was a bike or public transit). I would wager that those same people would stamp their vegan sandals in protest at the thought of building illegal immigrant housing in the neighborhood. They wouldnt admit to NIMBY syndrome; rather, objections would be framed as there should be no segregation of illegal immigrants into such structures in ANYONES neighborhood.
I've driven up and down Georgia Avenue several times. I once stayed in Prince George's County, which at the time (late '80's) seemed to be mostly black.
Takoma Park is full of weirdos - didnt they vote to make Takoma Park a Nuclear Free Zone back in the Reagan years ?
On the local news they say Trump is trying to warehouse kids ...
Someday, all this concern and compassion will turn to anger.

Must put your irony hat back on..
The Mayor of Washington- an avowed Sanctuary City and Fairfax County VA another ‘iffy’ but represented in part by Jerry Connelly (D-VA) was suddenly granted a lot of money to maintain a shelter for the ‘innocent babies’ that were being ‘mistreated’ on the border.
As soon as the ‘announcement’ was made these two LIBERAL strongholds said ‘no way Jose’..
I thought at the time it was another PDJT ruse to get peoples panties in an uproar.
They were so rattled that they forgot to GET THE MONEY before they ‘complained’
Winning Again!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NIMBY Rats!
