As gun-related violence spikes in Toronto, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called for adding more “common sense” gun restrictions to the country’s already restrictive firearm laws. Toronto enjoys a relatively low gun-related homicide rate compared to many U.S. cities, but that hasn’t stopped Trudeau from blaming guns for the city’s crime.
“Recent shootings have underscored the need for common sense firearms policy,” Trudeau said at a press conference after a meeting with Toronto Mayor John Tory. “We need action. But Mayor Tory and I agree that we can’t simply arrest our way out of this problem.”
Seventeen people were shot in one weekend last week, and this summer saw the most shootings ever recorded in one month in Toronto, City News reported. The number of shootings so far this year (267) has eclipsed the number occurring over the same period last year (248), according to Reuters. Twenty people have died as a result of this year’s violence and 132 people have been injured.
Officials in Toronto and Montreal have requested a nationwide handgun ban to combat the violence, but Trudeau stopped short of promising that policy in his statements earlier this week.

When I read the headline I thought ‘Pierre’s at it again’. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Dollars to doughnuts the “gun” violence is due entirely to an influx of illegal aliens. Of course, the Canadian limpwrists would NEVER lay blame where it BELONGS.
No RKBA laws in Canada’s constitution.
The only countries with explicit constitutional statements on weapons rights are the USA, Mexico and Guatemala, with the latter two having several caveats and no non-infringement clauses.
It's almost impossible to get a handgun in Canada already.
What is it you're trying to fix?
What is really needed is common sense socialism control.
Socialism causes such incredible harm to society, it is not unreasonable that it should, as a minimum, have similar controls to what gun control advocates call for guns.
1) Open socialists and concealed socialists both need to be licensed, and socialism should be prohibited to those with felony convictions, mental illness, or arrest for domestic abuse. As determined by a federal database.
2) Those under 21 years of age should not be allowed to be socialists. And socialism should clearly be prohibited in “no socialism zones” in schools, churches and government buildings.
3) A library of socialist media should be called an “arsenal”. States should opt as to whether socialism is only limited to the home, or can be carried in public.
4) Veterans with “Post Traumatic Capitalism Disorder” (PTCD) should not be allowed to possess socialism.
And Ax Control.
And Rope Control.
And Caustic Chemical Control.
And Truck Control.
And...well, you get the idea.
The same thing is going on here in the USA. It's not politically expedient to point out which ethnic groups and/or subcultures are committing most of the mayhem.
Round up all the Somalis and send them home
Not about guns, justin. Ask yourself what has changed in Toronto to bring this about? Who have you allowed into Canada who might have done this? Canadians are peaceful people. Eh?
Yeah, that’s rich. Officials with no common sense are calling for common sense gun control. How would they know?
