Canada: Jihadi Jack’s dad says Canada could “be enlightened world leader” by bringing son “home”

The father of Jack Letts, who has been dubbed “Jihadi Jack” by the British media, is advocating for his son to come home to Canada (he held British and Canadian citizenship, but has been stripped of his British citizenship). Playing Canadians for fools, he stated that “Canada could prove itself an enlightened world leader” if Jihadi Jack is brought back to Canada. Never mind the unspeakable acts that Jihadi Jack has committed and the threat he poses to Canadians.
John Letts said he wrote to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau two weeks ago to argue that Canada should accept his son, a former joint citizen who is now solely Canadian because of the U.K.’s recent action.
John Letts wrote to the right person. Trudeau has already rolled out the welcome mat to Islamic State jihadis, and he believes that “a Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian,” even if the person is an enemy combatant at war with Canada and its citizens.
“Jihadi Jack converted to Islam as a 16-year-old. His parents had supported his decision,” and they subsequently ended up “convicted of funding terrorism by sending cash to their son in Syria.”
As it remains unknown whether or not Canada will accept Jihadi Jack, the threat that he and other jihadists pose to Western citizens is extreme. Last year, an Iraqi judge said that he was sentencing jihadis from the UK to death in order to protect Britain.
Abdul Sattar Beraqdar, spokesman for the Supreme Judicial Council, said British members of ISIS deserve to die and “The punishment, as much as it seems strong, will affect the security of your country….I am sure there are hundreds of people in Britain at this moment thinking of committing similar crimes.”
In 2017, UK government minister Rory Stewart stated similarly that the “only way of dealing” with Islamic State jihadis “will be, in almost every case, to kill them” for the protection of Western citizens. Stewart warned:
These are people who have essentially moved away from any kind of allegiance towards the British Government…..They are absolutely dedicated, as members of the Islamic State, towards the creation of a caliphate, they believe in an extremely hateful doctrine which involves killing themselves, killing others and trying to use violence and brutality to create an eighth century, or seventh century, state.
One fact is crystal clear, given the comments of Stewart and Judge Beraqdar: Western populations need to be protected from the severe threat of Islamic State jihadists; so do inmates in prisons, for that matter, since jihadists are radicalizing inmates of Western jails. Canada’s Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale, meanwhile, is looking after the interests of Jihadi Jack. Goodale said that Canada is disappointed that the UK has revoked the citizenship of Jihadi Jack, and “has taken this unilateral action to off-load their responsibilities.”
Aside from being absurd, the real disappointment is in Goodale as the so-called Public Safety Minister. He has, in effect, shirked his responsibility to keep Canadians safe. In Goodale’s view, the rights of Canadians are secondary to the rights of jihadists.

Letts — dubbed “Jihadi Jack” by British media — could be prosecuted and jailed in Canada if there’s evidence of wrongdoing, and would make for a powerful voice against radicalization, said the father.
“We can lead the world and show that there is a way through this mess,” said John Letts in an interview from his home in Oxford. “By taking our people back, we can be an example of how to deal with this … We can’t just leave a festering wound over in the Middle East. It’s going to come back and bite us again.”
And he stressed the family would never sue the Canadian government, rejecting comparisons to the case of Omar Khadr, who was awarded $10 million by Ottawa after he sued over torture while an al-Qaeda detainee.
Meanwhile, in a British TV interview from prison aired Monday, Jack Letts said he feels like he is Canadian and hopes the country will take him in, but is not optimistic. “I don’t think anyone is going to help me,” he told ITV.
Liberal Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale chastised Britain on Sunday for trying to “off-load” its responsibilities by taking away Letts’ citizenship, while the opposition Conservatives have said there’s no way he should ever be allowed into Canada
