Starting next week and continuing into October, you might see people carrying laptops walking through your neighborhood and knocking on doors. Theyre what the Census Bureau calls listers census workers charged with making sure the bureau has a complete list of all addresses as it prepares for its massive population count next year.
Its the first major field operation of the 2020 Census.
Starting next Monday, Aug. 19, listers will begin verifying the remaining 35% of addresses that need double-checking, using maps and a list of known addresses on a laptop. Mostly, they will be checking to see whether a basement was turned into an apartment, new housing was built, someone is living in a trailer on a property, or some other new or unconventional living arrangement exists

ah, well...so much for the earlier optimism, haha.
“During the 2010 census had a woman come up my driveway saying she was from the Census and wanted to ask some questions. I asked her for a photo ID but she had none.”
the “lister” a week ago had gov-issued photo ID & credentials, so maybe yours was actually a fake ...
LOL
The opposite, actually.
He had the good sense to stand completely still and avoid the subsequent ripping of flesh, had he moved away from her.
Funny thing...we never get “electricity salesmen” coming around anymore.
[you could say his disregard for the gate and signs kinda bit him in the arse]
In the 1980 census, I was in an office/management position and the enumerators came back in every evening and complained to me about the “hillbillies” who live in my area.
Lots of tales of “porch dogs, angry hicks and shotguns” when they walked into their yards.
All I could say was “And...?”
Smart boy, standing still ... and also smart for spreading the word!!
At any rate, Mrs. catnipman said no and shut the door, refusing to answer any more questions..........
They are doing us a great service, why be rude?
Rolling my eyes.
Because people are odd and offended easily for no reason. I have no respect for people like that. The government thing is just an excuse to treat people shabbily.
“They are doing us a great service, why be rude?”
well, she didn’t SLAM the door, just said no more questions and shut it ... the lister didn’t explain what they were doing or why, just launched into a bunch of questions out of the blue, so she’s lucky any of her questions got answered at all ...
The human body is amazing. Even a very heavy person, if he is consistent about it, can quickly improve his strength and endurance remarkably.
No, that's one of the "scripts" they gave us. Sounds like this one was new, and awful nosy.
She [the n00b lister] will get some chin music from future respondents, and learn to be less intrusive.
The lister would have had a identification badge hanging from a black strap with the word "CENSUS" repeated multiple times, carrying a small laptop with the logo "Census 2020" w/an eagle emblem, and also a black laptop bag with a white square containing the words "United States Census Bureau" in blue lettering.
Of course, if it's a "dangerous address", they'll put "Unable To Work", and then the case will go to the real experienced Census employees.
They can be persuasive...
Census joke ;-)
I worked the last census, and my buddy who was great and worked the 1990, 2000 & 2010 censuses didn't believe me when I told him to fill out the online application.
I got hired again, and he didn't. Tried to get him in anyway after I got hired, and was told that a supervisor got fired for trying to get someone they knew hired that way.
We got photo IDs for this go-around. :)
IDs, yes - but I don't remember a photo part.
What pisses me off is the census required that I give them much more information than normal, some kind of community survey. And yet, you cant ask whether someone is illegal.
“Listers can trespass until they’re asked to leave”
Would like to read your logic behind that.
No trespass without a warrant from a judge.
Even Police CANNOT enter, unless in response to threat of life or property.
Building department CANNOT enter to inspect without permission or warrant.
Why could Listers?
