A few cultural elements of African American early 20th century spiritual life (it was close to what ‘charismatic’ protestant churches look like today) have remained. They are in the background, but they are still there. The overall view of LGBT in the African American community is closer to the rural white christian oilworker in Oklahoma than it is to the current ‘rat thinking on ‘alternative lifestyles’. They may vote ‘rat, but some of what granny and grandpa taught (before too many African American homes went single parent) still flows through many of those those households.
