Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Tuesday that the Islamic State remains a “complicated” foreign policy challenge and is actually stronger in some corners of the world today than it was before having its self-proclaimed “caliphate” decimated by U.S.-backed forces in Syria and Iraq.
“There are certainly places where ISIS is more powerful today than they were three or four years ago,” said Mr. Pompeo, who asserted that President Trump “is very focused on making sure that we apply the right resources against the problem.”
Mr. Pompeo’s rare acknowledgment of the Islamic State’s threat, a group President Trump has claimed victory over, came during an interview with “CBS This Morning.”

I dunno, I never, ever, ever thought that ISIS or the Taliban could or would ever be “defeated” in the sense that they would accept some degree of punishment, whether partial or total obliteration, then cease hostilities, then show up at a negotiating table, accept or agree to terms, and then live happily ever after or perhaps become an ally of the US. Never thought that for a minute.
These are stateless actors. While they’d like to establish ownership of a territory such as Afghanistan or Syria or equally as likely; France or Sweden, theirs is a political or spiritual or philosophical battle and in no way will they ever surrender or submit to a Western power. Their religion is their struggle. Their attention span is decades. While we’ve been in Afg for 17 stupid years, astounding, our attention span is months.
If we chase each and every Talib out of Afghanistan and/or kill them, others will take their place and regroup somewhere else.

Where there is a lawn, there will always be weeds. If you don’t want the the weeds to choke out the lawn, you pull the weeds and use appropriate weed killer. But there will always be weeds.
Simple choice, get overrun with weeds or do lawn maintenance. There are no other options.
But I worry much less about the weeds in some guy’s lawn across town. I’d rather weed my own yard, maybe help the guy next door with a few.

And like syphilis or cancer, the disease can go into remission and seem defeated but later come back in force. eliminating the vector is the only way to effect a cure with present technology.
Believe it or not, Pompeo is doing President Trump a huge service here. How do we know? We don't see President Trump tweeting Pompeo is ignorant, uninformed or doesn't know as much as he does, do we?
