WASHINGTON — Days after a pair of deadly mass shootings in Texas and Ohio, President Trump said he was prepared to endorse what he described as “very meaningful background checks” that would be possible because of his “greater influence now over the Senate and over the House.”
But after discussions with gun rights advocates during his two-week working vacation in Bedminster, N.J. — including talks with Wayne LaPierre, the chief executive of the National Rifle Association — Mr. Trump’s resolve appears to have substantially softened, and he has reverted to reiterating the conservative positions on the gun issue he has espoused since the 2016 campaign.

A lot of people don't know that POTUS has been an NRA supporter for many, many years. As young men, his sons competed in High Power Rifle competition representing the NRA in Europe for a number of years.
In before the rush of Freepers apologizing for doubting President Trump.

I don’t think that’s the narrative. They’ll congratulate themselves for forcing him to change his position.
Yup.
Trump took a step in their direction appearing to be reasonable and open to compromise. He knew that at the end of the day the Democrats would hate his friggin’ guts too much to strike any deals with him.
This moves some wobbly suburban women into his column.

I doubt that DJT is “responding” to anything beyond his own instinct. I thought that when he seemed to be supporting Red Flags. That was just to give some misdirection to get the Left’s salivaries going then he gradually starts hinting at objections to it and the Left kind of holds its fire hoping to not scare him away from RedFlags altogether. Second guessing DJT is a fool’s game.
And some of us are a bit smug, including me. Second Guessing Donald Trump is a fool’s game.
Now, if he’ll just send Ivanka on an extended 5 year “vacation”- maybe go hold hands with Prince Harry numb nuts and his grifter wife.
I am glad he isn’t going to betray us and I thought it might be 3D chess all a long.
BUT he destroyed our pro-gun momentum with the bumpstock ban and he has shifted the overton window in the wrong direction.
In order to repair the damage he needs to go rabidly pro-gun in his second term.
He needs to start pushing to repeal old gun control.
