Fresh from the same Dept. of Energy and EPA that gave us:toilets that don’t flush; light bulbs that don’t light; dishwashers that don’t wash; plant-based fuel that burns like carrots; and paper straws that dissolve in liquid…. Now we get this:

Setting the thermostat at 82° at night is well recognized grounds for divorce. I swear these administrative state progressives are going to have us force-fed sustainable algae cakes if this keeps up.
Some journalist-type person published these new cooling standards on twitter, and the responses are quite funny.

Yep, just happened to a friend of mine in California, in an apartment. No questions asked, they just showed up and replaced the old thermostat with a ‘smart’ unit. He still has full control over temperature, FOR NOW.
Once the mods are completed, I suspect, at a minimum people will see their units shutting off when the wind don’t blow or the sun don’t shine.
I suspect that if he tried putting the old t-stat back on, the Smart Meter would squeal to the energy commissars that it lost communication with the t-stat, so that option may not work.
The only real workaround, in an apartment at least, that comes to mind is to have portable air conditioning units ready to go for those cases...although it’s still possible (although less likely) that the Smart Meters will bitch at the power usage from these units, although that becomes less likely if the apartments have electric appliances, since they also use a lot of power. (but yes, even AC units can be distinguished from electric ovens by their power profile, but I don’t know if Smart Meters are up to that level, yet)
I have 2 septic tanks at the house at the farm. I’m not at all concerned about that type of regulation. Am moving to the farm in the spring. And sell the house in town. (tiny town)
The LED bulbs were another scam. They don’t last nearly as long as they said, power supplies run hot and failed early.
And I have difficulty reading in the light of LED lighting.
LED lamps work a lot better on DC than AC. Low voltage DC power for LED lights is an efficient method. But poor quality lighting.

My first install on a new job was a conventional 25 Ton Roof Top Unit that was being used to supply single pass air to a laboratory.
The lab needed the cooling, but could only take about half of the airflow from the unit, because it was balanced with the fume hoods. So the designer simply ducted half of the airflow directly back into the outside air supply plenum.
You can guess what happened next.
When the outside air reached 75 degrees, the unit called for cooling, and supplied 60 degree air. As soon as the unit turned on, half of the cool air was ducted into the fresh air supply plenum, and the controller detected a mixed air temperature of 68 degrees. The unit then went into economizer mode and shut off the compressor. As soon as the cooling was off, the mixed air temperature went back to 75 degrees, and the unit turned itself back on.
The cycle time for this disaster was about 55 seconds.
So our single-stage 25 ton DX system was turning itself on and off every 55 seconds, and slugging the compressor with each and every cycle. Equipment that was designed to last for ten years lasted about two hours. The mechanic bought a new compressor, rigged it to the roof and installed it, and the new compressor lasted about two hours.
I tell you, ya’ can’t make this stuff up!

I wondered why the bulbs failed so soon, until I felt of one that I took out of the socket right after the failure. Very hot to the touch. Power supply failure.

When I built my house in 2001, I briefly considered air conditioning, but didn’t spend the money.
Since then, there have only been 4 or 5 nights (in eighteen years) that were unseasonable for sleep.
Of course, we DO use a lot of wood in the winter.

I get weekly email from the electric co (Met-Ed) telling me how I’m doing in relation to my 39 neighbors in this condo complex. I just ignore them. Same with the water co (York Water).
I handle heat well, mine is set for about 76, I don’t like high bills. Most nights I cut the AC off. But when the night temps are over 80, the AC is on.
I have a lot of wood available. Don’t use it in town, fireplace is inefficient. Different situation at the farm. It helps there.
I have a Lennox AC that's about 7 years old and it has a programmable thermostat which allows you to turn on dehumidifying and keeps the humidity below 50%. Most of the time the screen shows "cooling" but occasionally it says "system is dehumidifying". When that happens the temp will usually drop below the system temp setting.
