If I believed this film could incite violence, I wouldnt have made it, he wrote in an email to Variety.
He also said he was devastated by the shootings and agreed with the decision to not release the film after he said it had been misinterpreted.
I was devastated by going to sleep to El Paso and waking up to Dayton, Craig Zobel said. These types of moments happen far too often. In the wake of these horrific events, we immediately considered what it meant for the timing of our film. Once inaccurate assumptions about the content and intent of the movie began to take hold, I supported the decision to move the film off its release date.
The director insisted the film had been misunderstood and that it was supposed to show what happens when both sides of the political spectrum fail to listen or try to understand one another.
He said he did not think it took sides against conservatives.
"Our ambition was to poke at both sides of the aisle equally, Zobel told Variety.
I wanted to make a fun, action thriller that satirized this moment in our culture where we jump to assume we know someones beliefs because of which team we think theyre on ... and then start shouting at them," he told Variety. This rush to judgment is one of the most relevant problems of our time.

Part of the problem is I dont think anyone ever heard of this movie until it was about to come out. So it was too late to lobby the production company to drop it before it started shooting. Saying it shouldnt be released was an appeal to those same producers. That is not censorship because those bringing pressure to bear have no power other than public opinion. Social media companies banning people is censorship because those firms CAN drop the axe.
We’ll just have to have two different opinions on the subject.
Was it not such a good idea to even make the Movie, probably.
Could the timing of its release been any worse, probably not.
When they made the Movie about assassinating POTUS Bush 43 (while he was in Office) I had a different take. That was bordering on Criminality.
I would have objected if they used POTUS Obama (it makes me queasy just saying that) instead, but we all know that would have never crossed their minds in the first place.
OK. Yeah, I never side with censorship. Though I think we have every right to vocalize our dissent about what movies or TV shows are aiming to do. One of the reasons I get a bit irked when some on the right want to censor video games.
Dog whistle fir CW2
The sheep, not so much.
I firmly believe that they have already reshot the ending at least once.
I do not think we would ever see the original product.
Craig Zobel said he movie he directed was intended to "poke at both sides of the aisle equally."
You seem to be quite the practiced apologist/antagonist with a little passive/aggressive thrown in for good measure. I mean, c'mon - five retorts to five different people consecutively in the same posting? In other forums, you'd be a troll.
The smoke detector was hilarious. Thanks. I needed the chuckle.
“Nah, I have no interest in reading the script or screenplay. Have you?”
Well, I just thought you must have read it, since you commented on it as if you were familiar with it.
