If I believed this film could incite violence, I wouldnt have made it, he wrote in an email to Variety.
He also said he was devastated by the shootings and agreed with the decision to not release the film after he said it had been misinterpreted.
I was devastated by going to sleep to El Paso and waking up to Dayton, Craig Zobel said. These types of moments happen far too often. In the wake of these horrific events, we immediately considered what it meant for the timing of our film. Once inaccurate assumptions about the content and intent of the movie began to take hold, I supported the decision to move the film off its release date.
The director insisted the film had been misunderstood and that it was supposed to show what happens when both sides of the political spectrum fail to listen or try to understand one another.
He said he did not think it took sides against conservatives.
"Our ambition was to poke at both sides of the aisle equally, Zobel told Variety.
I wanted to make a fun, action thriller that satirized this moment in our culture where we jump to assume we know someones beliefs because of which team we think theyre on ... and then start shouting at them," he told Variety. This rush to judgment is one of the most relevant problems of our time.

The Hunter was a good movie!
It's one thing to produce a movie like Hunger Games or The Handmaid's Tale that uses allegory to skewer a particular political viewpoint. It's another to engage in straight up violence fantasies that stoke one side, no matter the outcome of the plot.
“I wonder, what if the roles were reversed?”
That would be the plot of all of this guys other movies. The Purge 1 through 8 or whatever.
Those are all rich snooty people (business people) hunting minorities and such.
“”Our ambition was to poke at both sides of the aisle equally, Zobel told Variety.”
Sure. . . .I believe a Hollywood lefty is capable of equal treatment. . .
yeah, we’re just too stupid to understand it. If the movie don’t generate hate and violent behavior toward any person that even appears to be a Trump supporter, I don’t know what is. This asshat needs to be in jail. Remember the guy that went to jail for making a video about.......was it Benghazi?
Like everyone else on the left he is a lying piece of shit. Like any other child the moment they get caught at something ‘ oh, I did not mean it, that is not what I meant, the dog ate my homework.
Bull Shit! He is a hater and haters always hate.
Frankly that kind of movie was made and it was called “Hard Target” and they hunted homeless vets.
Not misunderstood, circle jerk! It is the moral depravity of Hollywood to make a film where people of differing viewpoints are hunted! In a nation where we are endowed with inalienable rights guaranteed by law! This goes against everything that America was based on. Get the hell out of this country!
It Hollywood bed partner of the clown network! The film is a dog whistle.
Umm, one of the villains called them "deplorables". When Steven Spielberg made "Schindler's List", did you think he hated Jews because the Nazis in the movie hated them?
“This movie is a win for Conservative Republicans.”
The kneejerk reactions to it are embarrassing though. I don’t think too many people even bothered to watch the actual trailer before condemning it.
“This person really thinks his script/screenplay is poking fun?”
Have you read the script/screenplay?
Kind of too similar to “Hard Candy”.
“What sort of person makes a movie that thinks it might be OK to pick a team based on politics and then hunt them down.”
Who did that?
When you see “Silence of the Lambs”, do you think it’s advocating killing and eating people? Why do you think a villain doing something in a movie means the writer/director is advocating for it?
Why? You want a movie where antifa wins?
>>>but I don’t think it’s fair to accuse conservative media of censorship just for saying a movie should not be released<<<
Well, I think we are arguing semantics here. If they said the Movie is stupid / hateful / sick / perverted / fill in the blank so don’t go see it I am in complete agreement.
Saying it shouldn’t be released is something else entirely, at least in my opinion.
Did you see The Hateful Eight? That was one sick puppy for a myriad of reasons. Doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be released. Slap an R Rating, maybe even an X Rating on it and go to town.
Hmmmm worth the rental then....I would watch this over say Netflix “When they see us” that is for damn sure.
Not sure if anyone was supporting censorship. The movie distributors decided not to show it I believe based more on recent violence.
Well, the first half when the Liberals are hunting the Conservatives is a Dog Whistle.
The last half here the Conservatives are hunting the Liberals is the Dog biting.
I was speaking of the reactions when the Movie Trailer came out, not what the distributor did because of the mass shootings. Two separate issues.
I remember seeing a Movie called The Hunting Party decades ago with Gene Hackman, Oliver Reed and Candice Bergen. It took wanton revenge and violence to a new level at the time.
At the time I thought is was way over the top. It was almost as bad as Bergen’s reincarnation of Murphy Brown. Shivers...
