I’m reading we are field testing some mounted laser on a DDG in the gulf that supposedly shoots down missiles, planes and knock the crap out of small boats. If this is successful and capable of rapid fire it would make a CBG much more formidable.
Six shots a minute was the highest fire rate I have seen published for any seaborne laser system, and that only if the ship is dumping its entire generator capacity into charging the laser. The Obamanavy cancelled funding into the fusion reactors that would have enabled the system to charge faster and we no longer have any nuclear fission powered destroyers or cruisers to mount it on.
