Cory Booker on why Democrats should go bolder on gun control (Yes, please)
Vox ^ | August 16, 2019 | German Lopez and Katherine Kim

Sen. Cory Booker wants Democrats to go bolder on guns — and says they’re playing into the hands of the National Rifle Association and the corporate gun lobby by rejecting bolder ideas.

“For Democrats to play into the hands of the corporate gun lobby, and just letting them define what the realm of possible is, it’s so defeatist to me,” the New Jersey senator told me during an interview this week. “At a time with the levels of carnage in our country, we don’t need people who are defeatist in their thinking about what’s possible.”

Booker, who is running for president, was among the first 2020 candidates to release a comprehensive gun policy platform, as well as a second platform that focused on gun suicides.

For the past two decades, Democrats have by and large stuck to two ideas for gun policy: universal background checks and an assault weapons ban.

Booker’s proposals, however, went further by calling for a licensing requirement to buy and own a gun. Researchers have repeatedly found that gun licensing would do more to push down gun deaths in the US than just universal background checks or an assault weapons ban — studies that Booker pointed to in defending his proposal.

As I'm sure you know, in the State of NJ in order to purchase a firearm you must file papers (including references) and submit payment with your local sheriff AND get fingerprinted. Once you get your ID card, then you can purchase long guns that aren't banned in NJ.

If you to purchase a pistol, you basically have to go through another round of paperwork (and payment) for EACH PISTOL PURCHASE. Further, after that paperwork is processed (which can take up to 90 days) you are sent what is basically a coupon that gives you the "right" to purchase a pistol...for 90 days. If you don't buy the pistol in that 90 day period, the coupon expires (as does your right).

Small wonder Sen Booker's Newark saw one homicide with a "legal" firearm, and in this case it was likely a service pistol. And yet, all of these gymnastics to legally exercise a guaranteed right isn't enough for Spartacus. Maybe he can propose eliminating bad weather to help stop blackouts.

....went to a local gun show with the intent of looking to buy my first AR-15 platform long gun..... found one that I liked and was offered at a very good price.... filled out the BATF Form 4473, came back okay, paid the dealer and walked out with my new prize.... took about 15 minutes; no problems at all.....oh, wait....I live in TEXAS...!! we don’t put up with the kind of crap that the residents of the People’s Democratic Republics of New York and New Jersey.have to endure when it comes to legally buying firearms...!!

Believe it or not, NJ is better than NY where you have to notify the local sheriff of precisely which firearms you have in your home. If you don't and they search your home for whatever reason and find an "unregistered" firearm, you are in trouble. In NJ there is no requirement to "register" your firearms with the police.

At the same time, in certain "Normal" towns you can get a concealed carry permit in NY while you have a better chance of finding the Easter Bunny in NJ than getting a "may issue" carry permit.

Of course homeschooling laws in NJ are almost non-existent while in NY (and very gun-friendly PA) they are atrocious. Go figya.

But every other shooting in our city was done with someone who could not legally buy a gun.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Which should have told him that criminals don’t care what laws you pass and will ignore ALL of them.
Gun control doesn’t work, but Booker is too stupid to know that.
To be clear, once you have the ID in NJ, purchasing anything other than a pistol is as simple as it is for citizens in other states (as long as it isn't on the NJ list of scary, banned long guns). The process you outlined for TX residents is the same as it would be for NJ residents.
I believe sometimes, residents in Blue States hear bad reporting and believe it's impossible to exercise their civil rights. Notwithstanding the internal violent protest anyone may have when going through the administrative gymnastics to obtain a firearm legally, you CAN purchase a firearm legally in NJ and NY. It is possible these hurdles are burdensome intentionally to tamp down the quantum of legally-armed citizens. Further, in many towns in NJ my understanding is the local police force is pretty good about firearms ownership (though it's usually due to the tone at the top). Not all towns in Blue States are run by anti-gun statists, just like every town in TX isn't run by Charlton Hestons (witness Austin).
Obviously Sen Booker knows the truth and doesn't care, or he is profoundly ignorant. Or both.
