Filmmaker Nanfu Wang grew up in rural China under the country's one-child policy, which was announced in 1979 and not officially rescinded until 2015.
Born in 1985, Wang never knew a life without it — as a kid, she remembers seeing propaganda promoting the rule everywhere.
"At some point, it just became a normal part of life, just like the air, the water, the tree," she says. "And you just stop paying attention, stop questioning, because it has always been there."

They are trying to normalize Anthropogenic Global Warming as a fact that everyone believes and accepts.
I read an article just about every day that has some reference to Global Warming. Many days more than one.
I think that Global Warming caused the One Child policy.
The “dark side” of the one child policy is that China is a Masculine nation while the USA has become a Feminine nation. In the game of empires masculine nations win out. There are two Masculine Empires in the world. They are Islam and China. Europe and its components are feminine nations. The 19th Amendment made us an unalterably Feminine nation, not immediately of course, but inexorably.
China now has an excess of men who will not find wives. They are a danger to a society and must be killed off in external wars and conquests, Islam is similar because the women are to some extent monopolized by the rulers and the prosperous.
And now they’re having trouble convincing a massive cohort of only children told it is a sin to have more than one to have 2 for the motherland.
One of the side effects of the One Child Policy is a wave of kidnappings of women fleeing the DPRK and trying to find sanctuary inside of Manchuria.
The American Right still loves free sex, so freep them and the ChiCom horse they rode in on. You can’t have free sex and population management without coercive abortion. Don’t think Americans don’t want it: many FReepers are all about getting rid of the “wrong people’s” offspring.
Lack of women sows disruption in many ways. The classic method to deal with it is external military operations to get the dangerous excess killed off and to gain new territories and colonies in the process.

Bears repeating. Choosing which children get to be born based on likelihood of genetic defects is also horrible and often accompanies government control of family size.
