Pakistan Reports Deadly Clashes With India in Kashmir

By Ayaz Gul August 15, 2019

Pakistan says three of its soldiers were killed Thursday in clashes with India across the disputed Kashmir border, known as the Line of Control (LoC), amid increasing tensions between the two nations over the Himalayan region.

A Pakistani army spokesman claimed five Indian soldiers also were killed in retaliatory fire. Major-General Asif Ghafoor said skirmishes were ongoing intermittently.

Indian military officials are reported as denying any of their personnel were killed, but they did confirm three Pakistani forces were killed in "retaliatory action."

It was not possible to immediately seek confirmation of claims made by both the sides.

Pakistan later summoned the senior most Indian diplomat in Islamabad to the foreign ministry to condemn what an official statement described as "the unprovoked ceasefire violations" by Indian forces in several sectors along the de facto Kashmir border. "The ceasefire violations by India are a threat to regional peace and security and may lead to a strategic miscalculation," the statement said.

Pakistan already has expelled the Indian high commissioner to Pakistan, and has suspended all bilateral trade and public transport links in response to India's recent actions in Kashmir.

Tensions have significantly escalated between the two nuclear-armed rival countries since Aug. 5 when New Delhi abruptly ended semi-autonomous status for the Indian-administered portion of the divided Himalayan region and bifurcated it into two territories to be directly controlled by the federal government.

A massive security crackdown and communications blackout to deter violent reactions to the controversial move have since cut off millions of residents of Kashmir from the rest of the world.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi defended his decision to strip Kashmir of its special status during a speech Thursday marking India's independence.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, while denouncing the security lockdown in Kashmir, warned in a tweet Thursday that India's Hindu-nationalist government could be planning another "Srebrenica-type massacre & ethnic cleansing of Muslims." Khan referred to the 1995 massacre of thousands of ethnic Muslims, mainly men and boys, during the Bosnian war.

On Wednesday, the Pakistani leader claimed his country possessed "credible information" Indian military forces were planning a major cross-border attack to divert international attention from abuses being inflicted on Kashmiris.

The United Nations Security Council is expected to hold a closed-door meeting Friday to discuss the situation in Kashmir.

Polish ambassador Joanna Wronecka, the council's president for August, confirmed to VOA on Wednesday that the consultations were requested by China. It will be the first U.N. debate over Kashmir since 1971.

Kashmir has triggered two full scale wars between India and Pakistan since they both gained independence from Britain in 1947, and the territorial dispute remains the primary sources of regional tensions.

Pakistani and Indian militaries routinely accuse each other of firing the first shot across the LoC in violation of a 2002 ceasefire agreement, although both sides privately admit almost daily clashes in recent years have rendered the truce ineffective.

What’s the worst that could happen if they both cut it loose on each other? China gets involved. Nuclear fallout all over the region/world?

IIRC, The last time they came to the brink, Bush the Younger sent over Rumsfeld and Cheney along with military teams of experts to show the Pakistanis and Indians exactly what a nuke was would do to each of them. Apparently they previously hadn't had much of a clue about just how devastating a nuclear war would be.

That settled them both down and hopefully they haven't forgotten the demonstrations. And hopefully Pakistan has decided against targeting nuclear power plants in India. (I can only imagine what the aftermath of nuking a nuclear power plant would be.

As an aside, if ever there was an act for which a Peace Prize should be awarded, that was one.

“WE sould be rooting for India but why?”

I don’t know. So they can continue to colonize the U.S.? The number one polluter on the planet and the green nuts want US to pay Al Gore for carbon credits.

Wasn’t all that devastating to Japan. Hiroshima and Nagasaki are thriving, modern, beautiful cities which would put to shame Detroit, Baltimore with their crime, Chicago with its daily shootings, LA & SF with their large homeless population defecating on streets.

I don’t think the deaths are a regular thing, but they have happened before. Like when an Indian MiG-27 was shot down many, many years ago (variant of the MiG-23 Flogger).

True but you’re talking weapons of around 7kt - 15kt (depending upon various reports).

Today a lot of weapons carry 100kt weapons or higher yield (sub-launched for example).

Our land-based weapons (W-87) was around 475kt. I believe out subs carry SLBM with 375kt (W-88).

Been awhile since I looked at the numbers.

Of course, there were larger weapons until it was decided it was ....... (wait for it) .... overkill.

Yes for shorrrr todays nukes are bigger than WWII vintage.
But the Muslims never stop expanding.

Starting with a few nomads during Muhammad era, these are now majority Muslim:

Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Egypt, Turkey,
Iran, Sudan, Algeria, Afghanistan, Morocco,
Iraq, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, Yemen,
Syria, Kazakhstan, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal,
Tunisia, Guinea, Somalia, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan,
Sierra Leone, Libya, Jordan, United Arab Emirates,
Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Chad, Lebanon, Kuwait,
Albania, Mauritania, Oman, Kosovo, Gambia, Bahrain,
Comoros, Qatar, Djibouti, Brunei, Maldives, Gaza.

Large communities of Muslims are also found in China, the Balkans, India, and Russia.

And since Kashmir province is majority Muslim, this feud will never end.

Bigger bombs, more of them, and denser population centers.

It would be horrific on an almost unimaginable scale. Not tens of thousands, not hundreds of thousands, but millions of dead. Plus a cloud of radioactive dust circling the northern hemisphere such as has never been seen before.

Reasons why I think war will be global during the Tribulation and Great Tribulation.

Until they mostly-band-together and decide to try to take out Israel and her Coming King.

Yes, they actually go to war with the Returning Christ Himself.

I’m kinda hoping that Pakistan starts a major war with India. The expenditure of tens of billions of dollars in a multi-year conflict means there’s no room in the budget to fund the Taliban. Which means the Talibs get beaten like a red-headed stepchild by the Afghan government.

Hiroshima was 14kt. The ratios work on a cube root basis, meaning that a 100kt bomb is less than 2x as powerful as a 14kt bomb. Ever since Carl Sagan, people have been freaking out about nukes. You don’t want to be within a few dozen miles of a nuclear explosion. But the rebuilding of Hiroshima and Nagasaki began the day after the explosions. Both are thriving cities today with several times their pre-bomb numbers.

The estimate is that Pakistan has 150kt warheads, and India has 200kt. If you take India’s number, that’s about 2.4x the Hiroshima bomb. Not exactly some massive multiple. Note that neither Hiroshima or Nagasaki killed the entire population. Their 1945 populations were 350K and 263K respectively. The bombings are estimated to have killed 226K people, including cancer victims who died decades after the attacks.

I don’t see how the war can be avoided. Muslims will not give up acquiring more territory, in this case province of Kashmir.

A macabre thought is if India loses 800 million people, it will be still have 500 million left!

I read a document a few days ago that even a small nuclear exchange would drop the temp a few degrees for 3-5 years. This would shorten the growing season all over the world.

It WOULD impact the US. As much as we would hope it wouldn’t.

Plus the air would smell like burnt curry.
