A commercial helicopter pilot from Idaho has become the first woman in the Marine Corps to fly an F-35 fighter jet, a supersonic stealth aircraft.
Marine Capt. Anneliese Satz, a 29-year-old Boise native, completed her training program this past June at South Carolinas Air Station Beaufort, the Marine Corps announced last week. Satzs training lasted four years, taking her to bases in Florida, Texas and Mississippi.
The first flight in an F-35 is by yourself, Satz said. "The syllabus thoroughly prepares you for that first time you take off and for every flight after that, its an exhilarating experience."
Now, with over 300 flight hours under her belt, Satz is set to pilot the F-35B Lightning II as part of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121, the Green Knights, in Iwakuni, Japan. The aircraft is designed to operate from short-field bases and near front-line combat zones, the Corps said.
Satz said her time flying a commercial Robinson R44 Helicopter prepared her for a career as a military pilot. She also thanked her instructors and other members of her training squadron.

Go Idaho!
How fashionable. Leathernecks to candyasses.
She’s smiling too hard.
Cuter in the in-plane pics above.
Go figure.
No worries. Sometimes a Harrier trainee might get sent to another aircraft if he failed certain parts of the syllabus (like confined area landings) but that was rare.
Lol
Im with you
PC stunt
But I confess I slept with a lady pilot for three years but given she was a west Texas cattleman’s daughter
She kept her #hearmeroar down to a minimum
I loved her very much....engaged for a while.... but she wanted to be somebody more than be married with kids
Beautiful and endearing though....top shelf
“With the AV-8B, it was found that if the pilot spent some time in the Hornet”
They fly the Goshawk first and that is a pretty high performance jet.
“Newly minted Marine Aviators went straight to VMAT-203 for training in the AV-8A/C/B.”
They fly the T-45 first so they aren’t new to jets at that point.
“Killing young women is killing the future.”
Good point. I guess we should never let women ride in cars. /sarc
Yeah, I read that probably 10 or 15 years ago, and probably in Marine Corps Times, which I didn’t realize at the time was all crap.
Oh.
You dont know the difference between combat and traffic.
Good one.
Air Force has been doing the same thing for years; we have brand-new pilots from UPT (Undergraduate Pilot Training) going directly to RTU for the F-22 and F-35, just as we did with the F-15, F-16 and A-10 in the past. Top students in UPT classes traditionally have the option of a fighter slot, but—not unsurprisingly—a number want the heavies, looking at an airline career once their service commitment was up.
Had a friend who was a T-38 IP at Columbus AFB, MS back in the late 90s (now retired like I am). As assignment night approached, the fighter IPs were pushing the top student in their class to take an F-15 or F-16 slot, which he could have easily obtained, given his performance in pilot training. The student wanted (and got) a KC-10.
Do fighter pilots, nearing the end of their service commitment, get to switch to transports, so they can more easily qualify for airline jobs?
I have driven around Atlanta.....looking for Peachtree.
That was a day Ill never get back.
..close.... her name was Kara Spears Hultgreen...RIP.....
Does your wife approve of your putting anecdotes about all your former girlfriends on the site?
She would kick Laz’s ass.
Nothing special just another Pilot ,right
First flight is “by yourself.” A woman would say that. LOL
It is a thrill. We called it “solo.” My first flight in an F-84F was solo and my instructor took off as my wingman. All flights were solo, they never built a two seater.
A long time ago, I have to add. LOL
He agreed that a 29yo should be at home making babies instead of going to flight school. Do you really think he cares about a wifes opinion? :)
