TheJakartaPost (h/t RF) A Muslim cleric who was set to participate in qurban (animal sacrifice) during Sunday’s Idul Adha in Blitar, East Java, has died following three days of being in a coma after a cow struck his body. Sureki, 64, died on Wednesday evening at Ngudi Waluyo Hospital after being hit by the cow at Miftahul Jannah Mosque in Wlingi subdistrict, Blitar.

Farhan said “The cow is big and fierce. Its leash was broken when it tried to escape,” he added.

The cow was the aggressor (snigger).

Separate from this event, is the fact that the cow was being killed. I was not raised on a farm, nor did my Dad and I ever go hunting as we had always planned to do. I’ve never had to directly kill the animal to get my food. I know that most of the world still does just that.

If I absolutely had to do it, I could once I got hungry enough, but it would be very very difficult. I won’t lie.

Kosher slaughter (which Halaal slaughter is adapted from) is also done by slitting the throat with a specially prepared blade that is as sharp and humanly possible and without blemish. The cut must be made in a single stroke and sever the trachea and both carotid arteries and jugular veins. This produces such a rapid loss of blood that the animal experiences hypovolemic shock and loses consciousness before it can feel it's been cut. Then it bleeds out while unconscious and without feeling threatened so there's no release of adrenaline or steroids.

Done properly, it is as humane and painless a form of slaughter as exists.

You cannot damn Halaal slaughter without also damning Kosher slaughter.
