Screen all adult patients for drug abuse, national panel urges

A national panel of health experts recommended Tuesday that doctors screen all adult patients for illicit drug use, including improper use of prescription medications. But the group, the US Preventive Services Task Force, stopped short of endorsing such screening for teenagers, a position that puts them at odds with major adolescent health groups.

The panel, appointed by the Department of Health and Human Services but operated independently, said that its proposed guidelines are intended to combat alarmingly high rates of substance abuse in the United States. It cited a 2017 federal survey that found 1 in 10 Americans ages 18 and older said they were using illicit drugs or not using medications in ways that doctors intended.

The panel’s call for increased scrutiny by primary care doctors is an effort to slow the deadly use of opioids, including street fentanyl and heroin as well as prescription painkillers, perhaps the worst public health crisis in a generation. The experts hope that if front-line health professionals can detect patients’ burgeoning abuse of drugs early, they can help contain or reverse the problems.

A provision in the Affordable Care Act says that services recommended by the task force must be covered by insurance with minimal or no copayment.

There is no upper age limit for screening, said Mangione. While some people may assume that patients struggling with substance use disorders will be younger adults, older patients need scrutiny, too

Screen all politicians, first.

I’m surprised they didn’t exclude blacks and hispanics and gay people from this survey.....

Sounds like a solid plan to get the general public to trust the medical profession.

Said no one ever.

Bill of rights? We don’t need no stinking bill of rights.

Who has the relative with the drug testing lab. That’s the question I’ve got.

Not exactly a Death Panel but a prime example of out of the control government sowed by Obamacare.

Is this reasonable search, per the Constitution?

By the way; the VA did this nonsense then the government would yank the right to own firearms away from the VA patients who tested positive. Now very few people trust the VA.

This is just another back door gun confiscation scheme.

Okay. Then what?

Can't arrest them all -- there are way to many and most jails face overcrowding even now.

Where in the constitution does it say government has the right to control drugs?
If cocaine was $10 an ounce at the drug store our problems would be fewer.
I know of what I speak of, personally.

I well remember a question some years ago at my doctors office about firearms in my home. They were just doing what they had to do from the directives of the insurance company.

I said, “I am armed to the extreme, and have been shooting from the time I was a small boy and have never raised a firearm in anger.”

In my youth I was an avid hunter. I just got tired of killing game animals. I have zero problems with ethical hunters. One friend hunts my land and we share the venison. It is delicious.

Most unfortunately if I ever need to raise my firearms in anger in the future it will not be a deer. I pray that day never comes. I am good with firearms, 300 yards is easy but beyond that gets a bit hard. 500 yards needs superior optics that I do not possess.

ps
Relative to vermin on my land such as coyotes and pigs, killing such is just house cleaning. I do not kill the rattlesnakes unless they are near my house. They could kill my dogs and thus must go. It would be totally impossible to clear my land of all rattlesnakes. If they are not near my house I just leave them alone.

They sure went out of their way to be considerate. Must be really nice people.

“Where in the constitution does it say government has the right to control drugs?”

It’s right there in the Wickard/Raich Commerce Clause, brought to you by the New Deal and the War on Drugs, respectively.

My older brother has VA health care...
not only do they periodically check to see if he is taking
anything he is not supposed to be taking, but
they also check to see if he is taking the things he is supposed to be taking.
