BERKELEY HEIGHTS, N.J. (AP) - Trying to hold support in the manufacturing towns that helped him win the White House in 2016, President Donald Trump is showcasing growing efforts to capitalize on western Pennsylvania's natural gas deposits by turning gas into plastics.
Trump will be in Monaca, about 40 minutes north of Pittsburgh, on Tuesday to tour Shell's soon-to-be completed Pennsylvania Petrochemicals Complex. The facility, which critics claim will become the largest air polluter in western Pennsylvania, is being built in an area hungry for investment.
The focus is part of a continued push by the Trump administration to increase the economy's dependence on fossil fuels in defiance of increasingly urgent warnings about climate change. And it's an embrace of plastic at a time when the world is sounding alarms over its ubiquity and impact.

This is going to revitalize the domestic injection molding and other plastics industries, much of which was centered around the Cleveland to Pittsburgh area.
Years ago I saw a trade show demo from US Steel where they were stamping out plastic combs with the USS logo.
The narration told us that the chemicals used to make the plastics had been reclaimed by scrubbers on the smokestacks of their steel plants.
I’d much rather comb my hair with that stuff than breathe it.
Didn’t seem to concern them that Roundup was killing people with cancer.
You’re correct. The gas that comes out of wells is processed through a stripper to remove most of the high value gases. People heat their homes with what’s left, methane, unless they happen to live in on land with a well with free gas rights or close to wells.
Not a petro-chemical engineer either but around here (North Central WV) homes with (a.)"Natural" gas wells on their property often get free gas piped from the well to the abode. (This is a rural area where there are no municipal gas mains) Depends on who owns the COG rights and what kind of deal is worked with the energy company.
the Shell cracker plant is the biggest boon to Western PA in decades. It has been absolutely amazing to watch them transform the area over recent years for this plant. Everyone around there has Marcellus gas leases just waiting for this plant to open so they can start collecting royalties for all the drilled and capped wells. The site covers the old J&L mill, a nickel plant and other former industrial sites. Property values are up, the local community colleges and universities are offering many skilled trade programs to fulfill jobs at the plant. Its all the talk of the town. Never heard any idiots complain about pollution which will be virtually non-existent anyways compared to the former industries that occupied the site. They literally covered hundreds of acres with 8 foot of soil and spent 3 years working on that and underground, moving mountains, roads and railroads before the first foot of above ground structure was ever erected. Sadly there will only be about 800 jobs when the plant starts operating, much less than the thousands working to build the plant, but still a net good for the economy and community around there.

A great future...

Roundup is not fertilizer.
Absolutely classic.
There are some types of natural gas that are defined as 'wet' gas that have more components than just the gas used for burning in your home.
This 'wet gas' is more valuable because there are more uses for it in our industries {which is the reason for this plant}.
PA, OH, WV and NY {but they don't use their gas} have been blessed with our natural gas supply. The region is working and people are happy.
Interesting, thank you!
