All flights out of Hong Kong airport were cancelled on Monday after thousands of demonstrators occupied one of the worlds busiest travel hubs, as Beijing denounced the protests as "terrorism".
The sudden airport shutdown came as mass demonstrations spilled into a third month, despite rising threats from the authorities.
On Monday, Beijing officials gave their third press conference in as many weeks, a rarity for authorities in normal times.
Radical protesters have been frequently using extremely dangerous tools to attack the police in recent days, constituting serious criminal acts with sprouts of terrorism emerging, said Yang Guang, a spokesperson for the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office in Beijing, which reports to Chinas cabinet.
Violence escalated significantly between protesters and police over the weekend, as officers shot tear gas into underground subway stations for the first time after mass demonstrations began early June. Police have made more than 600 arrests in recent days.
Protesters had already occupied the airport for days when more flooded in Monday. Some wore black eye patches, waving signs that read Hong Kong is not safe, Shame on the police, and An eye for an eye, turning out to express their anger after one person thought to have been shot by a beanbag round in her right eye was hospitalised.
Stations on the citys airport express line were filled with confused passengers unable to get to the airport, many of whom were on the phone with family, friends and colleagues to sort backup travel plans, while other visitors disembarked from the train after being turned away at the airport.

However the government has a conundrum to solve: How do they maintain good order and discipline, and still steal another $50 trillion from governments and societies who have a very, very different view of the world than they do?
I suspect they'll opt for 5,000 quiet murders and 100,000 visits to the reeducation centers.
Shooting them down in the streets is still an option, but not their first option.
Save Hong Kong.
I am surprised China hasn’t turned off all power and water to HK.
From what? The extradition agreement didn’t happen.
Do they think they’re gonna become independent.
If dead is independent then yes they have a chance.
The Chinese Communist Party is waiting for Joe to be Crowned President so they can crush Hong Kong
The Chicoms will do what they haver to do. No shame.
Reports are that the Hong Kong Chief Executive is already a lame duck, and China simply communicates its increasingly strident demands to Hong Kong Government via the Chinese Central Gov’t representative “Hong Kong Liaison Office.”
I also expect that Chinese army and public security are now spread widely through the the Hong Kong police force.
One thing for sure, after this, “one country two systems” is completely and utterly dead.
They showed what they can do after a police shot a woman’s eye out yesterday.
Beijing is doomed.
They have no viable choice.
No one in Hong Kong wants to be under communist rule.
They are showing it.
You sound like a spokesman for the ChiComs.
“I am surprised China hasnt turned off all power and water to HK.”
Lol,,
The airport wouldn’t run for certain if they did that.
Sorry, but this is an inane comment, but I understand where it comes from.
If the siituation in Hong Kong ends up being a massacre, our Social Justice Warriors will enthusiastically approve.
You are of course most correct. Here on the eve of the PRC’s 70th anniversary in particular there can be no major humiliation and loss o face. Now the US intel agencies could, if they were not so co-opted and obsessed with toppling a Constitutionally elected President might give the PRC hotfoot by slipping in individuals to do a lot of nasty things coincident with the Chicoms military action. Certainly pictures of some tall bank buildings in flames and general hell raised with the basic services there would be a trifle embarrassing to Peking.
“Do they think theyre gonna become independent.”
This should be our goal.
“I also expect that Chinese army and public security are now spread widely through the the Hong Kong police force.”
The began that one day one 1997. So, yes.
“One thing for sure, after this, one country two systems is completely and utterly dead.”
Yes.
It was already dead.
That’s why the protests began years ago and they just keep getting stronger and stronger.
The inspiring ‘Hong Kongers’ need to state a clear agenda.
It’s not just about that extradition law anymore.
... But what is it about?
If they’re saying, it’s not getting out.
All the protesters I saw at the airport were student age.
All the protesters I saw at the airport were student age.
Do you hear rhe People sing? Singing the songs of Angry men. It is the music of the People who will Not Be Slaves Again...
well, we know how that ended. /sigh
That’s because you have Paranoid Personality Disorder.
Funny.
But, no.
Your fatalism matches the ChiCom rhetoric.
That’s all.
