MANILA, Philippines Malacañang is open to seeking help from the United States to monitor Chinese vessels in the Philippines' exclusive economic zone in the wake of concerns over the reported passage of two Chinese warships through Sibutu Strait without clearance.
Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo noted that the Philippines has a defense treaty with the US, its traditional ally.
"There's nothing wrong with that. I think we are doing something so we can have our own satellite resources. While we do not have one, that's part of a treaty. There is a treaty between America and the Philippines," Panelo said in a radio interview, referring to the Mutual Defense Treaty signed by Manila and Washington in 1951.

It’s a bit too late for the P.I.
They invited the Reds in.
Now the new comers think they own the place...
Of course, it’s ok with them. Leave it to someone else to use fuel, equipment, ships that could be protecting their own country and military lives.
Is this the same Philippine Islands that made us leave our Subic Bay base?
You know its easy to criticize the policies of one admin and paint those policies as that of an entire country ( the Philippines) over the course of half a century while turning a blind eye to our own inconsistencys as we vacillate between conservative/American administrations and liberal/socialist administrations. Filipinos dont want China encroaching on their country any more than we want the chinese to have that strategic advantage.
Kick out our military and China gets frisky. Too bad.
Pass Obamacare and people get screwed for years to come...too bad?
Scaling back Obamacare is nothing compared to replacing Subic Bay. Actions have consequences. We aren’t going to rescue Venezuela, either, from their electoral preferences.
A couple of points.
1) no one has asked for us to rebuild subscribers bay
2) you completely missed the point of the poor political decision of Obamacare and the poor political decision to ask the navy to leave subic bay and not negotiate a new agreement in 1991. Administrations change but our national security priorities and principles should not.
The Philippine people are basically good people and embrace both Christian ethics and free market ideas, but they are also a poor nation. They are strategic in that they can provide forward basing or logistics points should we need them and they can provide services at great value. We should find mutually beneficial agreements and relationships and not hamstring ourselves over spilt milk.
Damn spell check. Twice I typed SUBIC and twice it auto corrected to subscribers
No one has asked us to rebuild SUBIC bay
