Nearly 50,000 Protest for Free Elections in Moscow

Nearly 50,000 Russian opposition activists and their supporters have taken to Moscow’s streets for a fifth consecutive weekend in spite of a government crackdown as support from citizens and celebrities grows across the county.

The protests, which demand that Moscow authorities allow independent candidates to appear on the ballot in the city’s upcoming elections, have been the largest wave of demonstrations in Russia since 2011-2012. Independent polling this week said that Moscow residents are more likely to support the protests than oppose them.

Moscow police have detained more than 2,300 people at rallies this summer protesting the candidates' exclusion. While most of those detained were quickly released, authorities accused protesters of using violence against the police.

Investigators opened criminal proceedings against several people over what they have called mass civil unrest, an offense punishable with up to eight years in jail.

On Friday, senators in Russia’s upper-house Federation Council said they will draft a bill to further restrict the locations where citizens will be allowed to protest.

Doubt if it will reach proportions equating to the Maidan, but interesting nonetheless. Quite a significant number of protestors.

Sounds like a local affair.

A good percentage of those in the crowd were probably plants of the state keeping an eye on the protestors.

I heard some interesting things about the people getting arrested at these “protests”. For one, they’re mostly not from Moscow and therefore ineligible to vote in the upcoming city elections. But even more interesting is the fact that many of them are either dodging the draft or dodging the debt collector, so police are dutifully enforcing those consequences as well.

I think Russia must have had maybe 2 free elections in its entire history.

They don't have John McCain to encourage them anymore.

in spite of a government crackdown as support from citizens and celebrities grows across the county.

But if celebrities have spoken out why hasn't the government fallen? Alyssa Milano, Colin K and Rosie O'Donnell would take care of that in one afternoon.

I am certain Puttie Pooh and his cronies have facial recognition and quite soon there will be about 50,000 folks going to the far east gulag.

Russia’s celebrities were on board with Crimea annexation and hundreds if not thousands signed a formal petition of support. But they didn’t realize that strings were attached. They (and all Russians) are waking up to the reality that you can’t have your cake and eat it too. You can’t just support tyranny when it serves your collective ego — in this case, bullying Ukraine— and then complain about it when it comes against you to oppress you next. (Putin vs his own people.)

Yours is the best insight I’ve seen on this issue.

Government oppression is not on again/off again.

1989-1993 to be precise marks the period between the rise and fall of Russian republic.
Bill Clinton and his puppet Yeltsin ruined the Rissian democracy in a period of three years after.
Putin is basically a product of this system but you have to admit that he is much more tolerant towards political opposition and respects civil rights more than any other Russian leader in history.
I in fact believe even the elections are quite fair now comparing to that it was before. It is clearly evident by the fact that anti-Putin opposition is taking over cities and state legislations around the country.
Moscow is one of a few place with Putinists taking a stand.

Center-left, you can see Communist flags as well. I believe the Imperial tri-colors are there simply not to fully out the protest as a leftist gathering it is.
