An envoy of U.S. President Donald Trump suggested on Friday that Chancellor Angela Merkel's unwillingness to boost defence spending might give the United States no choice but to move American troops stationed in Germany to Poland.
The comments by Richard Grenell, the U.S. ambassador to Germany, signal Trump's impatience with Merkel's failure to raise defence spending to 2% of economic output as mandated by the NATO military alliance.
"It is offensive to assume that the U.S. taxpayers continue to pay for more than 50,000 Americans in Germany but the Germans get to spend their (budget) surplus on domestic programmes," Grenell told the dpa news agency.
Germany's fiscal plans foresee the defence budget of NATO's second-largest member rising to 1.37% of output next year before falling to 1.24% in 2023.
Eastern European countries like Poland and Latvia, fearful of Russia after it annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, have raised their military spending to the 2% target, drawing praise from Trump who wants Germany to do the same.

Albeit indirectly, US taxpayers are subsidizing Euro-Muzzard 2nd, 3rd & 4th wives.
Euros can spend extravagantly on social programs cuz we’re defending them.
keep Ramstein, Spang and Landstuhl hospital... everyone else can move to Poland (incl Wiesbaden AB)
solidarność polska
Ramstein, Spang and Landstuhl are just facilities once the personnel are removed.
Build the facilities elsewhere and staff them with the same personnel and you have the same functionality but none of the political overhead and bullcrap.
Let’s get every single American servicemember out of Europe and to hell with the whole continent.
This is nuts. The decision should be based on which location makes the most strategic sense given our current and future threats. Period.
I agree, bring them home
Maybe the Euro plan for security all along was import as many muzzies as possible and Vlad will never want us.
The Art of the Deal!
US troops in Poland instead of Germany, might be even better protection for Germany from Russia.
Germans are some of the worst out of Europe, in terms of public (Men’s) willingness to fight for their country (Finns are the highest). Public opinion would probably like to weasel out of having to pay or contribute any troops, like New Zealand - even if it means putting their head into the sand, and denying threats.

Bringing them home makes the most strategic sense.
Poland makes as much or more sense than Germany and the pressure on Germany to pay for their own defense makes strategic sense.
I kind of felt that way, when I was stationed in Germany, back in the 80s. I still do not have a whole lot of warm fuzzy feelings for the Germans. I felt there was a substantial number of anti American/pro Russian people there.
Threaten tariffs on their auto industry - they have the politicians on a short lease.
No we have friends left in Europe .
The Versailles Treaty said we could, right?
That's true if you think Europe will manage things well enough on their own and that we will never need to re-engage, and that Russia doesn't pose a long term threat.
I'm not sold yet but it would be nice...
I believe the Eastern European powers (Poland, Hungary, the Baltic States) are pretty good friends to America.
We should side with the Poles and Czechs. They dont play the muzzie game. Theyre damn good people too.
