President Trump on Friday called for "intelligent background checks" on gun purchases in response to a string of mass shootings across the country, expressing confidence that Congress would come together on action.
Frankly, we need intelligent background checks, Trump told reporters as he left the White House for a fundraiser in the Hamptons.
"This isn't a question of NRA, Republican or Democrat," he added.
Trump said hes spoken with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), he said was totally on board.
The president also said he had a "great talk" with both Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) about gun laws.
"I think with a lot of success that we have, I think I have a greater influence now over the Senate and over the House," he said. "I think we can get something really good done. I think we can have some meaningful background checks."
McConnell has not publicly backed any gun bills following mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, though he did note a background checks bill backed by Sens. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) was once again getting attention.
That bill failed to get enough votes to move through the Senate after the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school shootings.
Trump previously voiced support for stronger background checks and an increase in the age requirement to purchase certain types of weapons following a shooting at a Parkland, Fla., high school. But he backed off amid opposition from the National Rifle Association (NRA).
The president said Friday that he believes there's stronger support for the issue now than following the Parkland massacre.
But the NRA has opposed proposals for stricter background checks and red flag laws, which would seek to keep guns away from people flagged as possibly dangerous.
Trump downplayed any opposition from gun rights lobby on Friday.
I have a great relationship with the NRA, he said. "They supported me very early and that's been a great decision they made."
Glad we saw his true colors before a second election.
Now we just have to stand firm for our Republic while we get flamed for being a Hillary voter..
We didn’t leave him, he left us.
The false flag of you’re a Hillary voter then is just another cheap shot by some deep state operatives who don’t want us to have guns either.
Trump, we already have them.
“Good guys” have to pass them to purchase a firearm.
“Bad guys” will not bother with the legal process to obtain firearms.
Please be intelligent on this issue when the Left is cajoling you into passing even more gun control that will not work (except to punish law-abiding citizens) and help to ensure that you lose in 2020 by betraying your base.
My knee jerk immediate response is,”Kiss 2020 goodbye”. Rationally ,I think the media is trying to split our side up and I don’t think POTUS is a gun grabber. All of that being said,I don’t like that gun grabbing language and related BS.
I would like to see things like the incidents that the Parkland shooter had before the shooting be reported to the national database.
Most freepers are terrific and I love the place, but as in any port in life, there are a few freepers I truly despise. They are either trolls, fifth columnists, or paid instigators. Or else they are just people full of spite who love to argue. They particularly detest true conservatives in primaries and pile on them in favor of globalists.
They ridicule conservatives and conservative principles. They are all over certain threads shouting, condemning, and using hateful sarcasm. They are camp liberals and board bullies. We have always had them, and I’ve been here since 1998. The originals are all gone, but we picked up a few during the terrible Bush years. Sometimes they actually cheer for Democrats. But they are bullies, so people rarely fight with them. It’s very unpleasant.
Some of them were Bushbots, absolute worshippers of that gutless globalist stooge. My advise, just state your mind and don’t read the replies. I haven’t formed a hard opinion of Trump’s surrender on gun rights and how to vote against that backdrop. But this is eerily reminiscent of the Bush years, when we were all sold down the river.
I would not say I was a Bushbot. I supported the guy, given the alternatives. In hindsight he disappointed me tremendously.
Well if a 21 year old’s Mother calls the local PD and voices concern because her son purchased an assault rifle, then “intelligent” people would talk to her, find out her name and look into the guy and what is going on. LIke the Mother of the El Paso shooter. She was reaching out but no one was smart enough to know it at the PD.
I left FR for a while because we ceased to agree to disagree. We ceased to have honest debate.
Yeah, you are right. Just stand for This Republic and it’s Founding documents. Never for a party. Never for a saviour in one man... already have that one covered.
Maybe they will disappear now that trump has put gun grabbing as his priority.
That means law abiding citzens will be overrun by criminals and shadow people.
I think we would be safer picking up a second language and becoming a no tax paying shadow person.
We aren’t being represented, so why pay taxes for it.
I said nothing about legality.
I said alcohol is a drug, and it is, pure and simple.
Do you want a drunk with carrying and using firearms?
I don’t.
Don’t be a hypocrite, bruh.
About ten years ago, I bought a revolver and a 22 rifle. I had a background check: filled out the form and they immediately checked with the FBI.
Now, can somebody explain what is meant by today’s call for background checks?
Do they have something else in mind other than background checks and just call it background checks?
And then when the left achieves power, membership in Free Republic will be deemed links a terrorist organization.
If youre an idiot, no guns for you!
And some faceless progressive bureaucrat gets to decide who is an idiot...Anybody who wants a gun MUST be an idiot!
Since there are already background checks, is anyone going to define an “intelligent” or “expanded” background, and explain why those on the books now are neither?
Apparently 911 was not called, so there was no call back number. No names or identifying information provided. If there was relevant information it was withheld.
All this is firearms focused and filled with bias.
Take out what we already know...and see what law was violated. This was an adult. No “dangerousness” signs are apparent in this claim.
Would could officers have done? What law would they have enforced.
So we’re getting rid of NICS?
It never matters who we elect, as soon as they get to Washington, the only work they do is to satisfy the Media. They never do anything to promote their voters interests. Just whatever the Media wants this week. It’s the same, again and again and again.
Yeah, that makes sense.
Do we really want Federal officers to show up on the doorstep of anyone who calls a local police station to say they’re concerned about gun safety?
Man, there are thousands of people right now that swear they have been assaulted if you call them a name at the check out counter in the super market. Can you imagine?
