President Trump on Friday called for "intelligent background checks" on gun purchases in response to a string of mass shootings across the country, expressing confidence that Congress would come together on action.
Frankly, we need intelligent background checks, Trump told reporters as he left the White House for a fundraiser in the Hamptons.
"This isn't a question of NRA, Republican or Democrat," he added.
Trump said hes spoken with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), he said was totally on board.
The president also said he had a "great talk" with both Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) about gun laws.
"I think with a lot of success that we have, I think I have a greater influence now over the Senate and over the House," he said. "I think we can get something really good done. I think we can have some meaningful background checks."
McConnell has not publicly backed any gun bills following mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, though he did note a background checks bill backed by Sens. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) was once again getting attention.
That bill failed to get enough votes to move through the Senate after the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school shootings.
Trump previously voiced support for stronger background checks and an increase in the age requirement to purchase certain types of weapons following a shooting at a Parkland, Fla., high school. But he backed off amid opposition from the National Rifle Association (NRA).
The president said Friday that he believes there's stronger support for the issue now than following the Parkland massacre.
But the NRA has opposed proposals for stricter background checks and red flag laws, which would seek to keep guns away from people flagged as possibly dangerous.
Trump downplayed any opposition from gun rights lobby on Friday.
I have a great relationship with the NRA, he said. "They supported me very early and that's been a great decision they made."
Frankly, we need intelligent background checks,
What we need is “Intelligence” background checks.
If you’re an idiot, no guns for you!
How, specifically, would the “intelligent” or “stronger” background checks differ from those presently in use?
Someone should explain to Trump that RATS only move one way.
Note the Budget battle.
Red Flag is what they want as the next step to confiscation.
He’s not going to get wall funding...immigration or anything else out of this.
And Turtle and the GOP-e are going to make sure of it.
We have to pass the legislation to find out what’s in it.
Background checks would likely never have caught these guys.
They were young. Either their troubling behavior was written off as being a young goof and never reported, or it went into juvenile records which were sealed.
If we’re going to hand over the power to red flag people to school psychologists the 2A is as good as dead.
Buying any firearm should be 18, just like vote, contracts, etc. Intelligent background check should be to arrest, prosecute, convict, jail or deport anyone that attempts to illegally buy a firearm. Further, enforce the rules: no membership or affiliation with a terrorist organization (e.g., antifa, Islamic cult member), no drug use, including pot.
Well said.
What about alcohol?
Alcohol is a drug.
Not just the 2A.
If your wacky lib neighbor calls a red flag on you...do you really think CPS won’t take your kids too...because if you’re a danger with guns...you’re likely a danger with kids too...
I’m just sayin’...
Have the brains larger than a box of hammers?
NO?
NO guns for you!
Why is there never a balanced discussion of Red Flag laws? Everyone talking about them talks as if they are 100% a good thing with no troubling aspects. Any honest discussion should include the absolute potential for serious abuse. If They want us to swallow the Red Flag Laws how about they fix the problems with them. How about a mechanism to deal w/ spurious or malicious red flag reporting. The potential for abuse and harm is massive. Fixing that needs to be part of the discussion.
It is not federally illegal like pot. Use pot, no gun buying. Anyone perjuring themselves to buy or possess a gun should be prosecuted. Pure and simple. We already have laws on books in many states prohibiting mixing firearms and alcohol. Commonsense to keep both separate and drug users face the consequences of their choices. Seriously, do you want someone with pot and other drugs carrying and using firearms?
Give them an inch and they'll take your guns.
Trump, you just lost 2020. Thanks.
Both owning a gun and voting are constitutional rights.
Both should have the same rules/regulations.
What the hell does that mean?
Is that like compassionate conservatism?
Everyone talks about ‘due process’ to get your guns back if you’re falsely accused.
What they do NOT say is YOU will be PAYING for that. For the YEARS it will take that to be adjudicated.
YOU will be paying for the shrinks to declare you ‘sane’ (good luck with that, most of them are gun grabbing liberals)
YOU will be paying tens (if not hundreds) of thousands of dollars for a lawyer during that whole process.
So, if you’re middle class...forget it...
And if the coppers send a swat team at O dark thirty to ‘get your guns’ ...and you think they’re really home invaders...you won’t ever get your guns back. You’ll be dead.
Shall not be infringed. You sir can go straight back to the NYC sewer you came from. Control and power over citizens while record numbers of mon-citizens are invading.
