Because the current background checks must be stupid. Try to think like a politician and you normally get the answer.

I would like to see things like the incidents that the Parkland shooter had before the shooting be reported to the national database.

Well if a 21 year old’s Mother calls the local PD and voices concern because her son purchased an assault rifle, then “intelligent” people would talk to her, find out her name and look into the guy and what is going on. LIke the Mother of the El Paso shooter. She was reaching out but no one was smart enough to know it at the PD.
