‘Red Flag’ Gun Control Bills Pick Up Momentum With G.O.P. in Congress
New York Times/MSN.com ^ | 6 Aug 19 | Sheryl Gay Stolberg

Congressional Republicans, under intense pressure to respond to this weekend’s massacres, are coalescing around legislation to help law enforcement take guns from those who pose an imminent danger — a measure that, if signed into law, would be the most significant gun control legislation enacted in 20 years.

Senator John Thune, Republican of South Dakota, said he was “confident Congress will be able to find common ground on the so-called red flag issue.”

Such “red flag” laws might not be as momentous — or controversial — as the now-expired assault weapons ban or the instant background check system, both of which were enacted in 1994 as part of President Bill Clinton’s sprawling crime bill. The House, under Democratic control, passed far more ambitious bills in February that would require background checks for all gun purchasers, including those on the internet or at gun shows, and extend waiting limits for would-be gun buyers flagged by the instant check system.

But those bills have run into a blockade that Senator Mitch McConnell, the majority leader, has erected for House bills he opposes.

Now, after back-to-back shootings this weekend left 31 people dead in El Paso and Dayton, Ohio, Republicans who have long resisted gun restrictions appear rattled. In Ohio, Gov. Mike DeWine was shouted down on Sunday by mourners in Dayton demanding that he “do something.” On Tuesday, he urged his fellow Republicans in the state legislature to pass measures establishing red flag powers and expanding background checks.

“They were absolutely right,” Mr. DeWine said Tuesday morning at a news conference. “We must do something, and that is exactly what we are going to do.”....

“I will support legislation that prevents the sale of military-style weapons to civilians, a magazine limit and red flag legislation,” he said in a statement...

Well, they got the color right—commie red. I think about the implications of this, including the medical community, who will be now empowered, in conjunction with the health insurers, to REQUIRE you answer their question “do you have any guns in the house?” From there it’s a short hop to a required mental health evaluation, performed by their favorite anti-gun shrink, and viola! You are now safe and harmless(sarc).

If these "Red Flag Laws" pass, it will be one of the worst disasters for the Constitution in our Republic's history.

Your Constitutional rights will be violated, without due process, because some SJW psychologist or psychotherapist deemed your a "threat", a disgruntled neighbor or relative "called you in", you once took medication that is on a "prohibited list", you are a veteran and have been labeled "at risk", or any other excuse the Soviet gulag can dream up.

There are those here who will undoubtedly defend these "Red Flag Laws", because when they came for the Jews, I was not a Jew. Or, they may say that President Trump would never really sign this catastrophe, he is only playing 3 dimensional chess with his opponents. Well, it sure looks like Congress is going to pass this monstrosity very soon, a mere few days after the shootings last weekend. And President Trump has said publicly that he supports it.

If Trump actually does sign this, screw him.

Those red flags should have the hammer and sickle in the corner.

Correct.

This law will be nothing short of national gun confiscation.

Just a few months ago, President Trump reiterated his support for our gun rights.

Now, he is not only in support of this cancer, he is the one going before the cameras pushing it on the public and Washington.

Some people don't believe that? See the video below, in his own words:

Trump says he supports "red flag laws" as means of gun control

This must be stopped, Congress must not pass it, Trump must veto it and SCOTUS must declare it unconstitutional.

Since various states have been passing these we need SCOTUS to invalidate them whether one passes at the federal level or not.

It probably will not take long for a lawsuit to be filed over such legislation (because of the likely mistakes and errors this sort of thing will cause) and then quite likely major parts of it being struck down as a result.

Congress must not pass it

They are going to, and quick. Congress knows they have to slide this garbage in fast, before the media loses our attention.

Senator Graham and Senator Blumenthal have confirmed that Senator McConnell is going to fast track the legislation. The vote will be a cake walk in the Pelosi controlled House.

And then we can count on the courts to be our Savior!

If we are lucky the left will insist on much more aggressive gun control in the House and the GOP will refuse that in the Senate.

It would be a gamble at SCOTUS and I hope it is stopped before that but ironically Trump’s SCOTUS picks make the odds of it being overturned better.

And the state laws need to be declared unconstitutional even if the federal law doesn’t pass.

We need another vacancy on SCOTUS ASAP.

I don't think we will be that lucky. They see this is a Golden Opportunity. The Gun Confiscation chance of a lifetime. They won't laden the bill down and blow their chance. Not only will they get their open ended gun confiscation law, they will divide Conservatives and patriots right down the middle.

If Trump signs it, it will be his resignation letter.

Just as "Hate Crimes" are whatever the Left says they are, someone will be "Red Flagged" because the Left says they are "threat." I guarantee it.

There is no way to spin this as a positive. I know there will be people here who will defend the Trump Train no matter what he does, but if he signs this, it's goodnight Irene for this country, and his presidency.

They will come for you, and for your guns. It will happen.

Don’t put your faith in the courts regarding the Second Amendment. Justice Thomas said they consider it a “Disfavored right”, and won’t even hear the cases.

Agree 100%.

Trump and the Repubs are finished if they pass this.

Red Flag laws are what Stalin, Hitler and Mao used to disarm the populace.

I don’t intend to put my faith in them but this violates multiple other Amendments too.

Hey, nothing like a legislation getting you swatted for wearing a Maga hat... wha is it to stop them from getting your knives, bat, car keys and Teump Signs while at it?

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot if they push this.

Screw him? He will screw himself. When people will be afraid of wearing a maga hat because of red flag law denunciation to cops, who is going to campaign for him.

That would be the typical idiotic shoot in foot “read my lips” move by Trump. He might end up in prison with his family, the democrats making good on their promise. Someone call his son to put some sense in his father and calm him the fck down.
