China warned that the U.S. and its Asia-Pacific allies risked countermeasures if they accepted the deployment of intermediate-range American missiles, singling out Australia, Japan and South Korea...
The comments underscore the difficulty facing the Trump administrations effort to counter Chinas own missile capabilities in the region after formally withdrawing last week from its Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty with Russia. Any country that accepts the missiles risks diplomatic and economic retaliation from Beijing -- and all three U.S. allies mentioned count China as their largest trading partner...
The 1987 INF treaty required the U.S. and Russia to never deploy ground-based ballistic and cruise missiles with a range of 500 to 5,500 kilometers (about 300 to 3,500 miles) -- either nuclear or conventional.

China’s mouth is getting more than annoying...
Put 50,000 of them in Taiwan. They will take them!
Should have never let Bill Clinton make them ‘Most Favored Nation Status’ or allowed them into the WTO!
Taiwan is Cuba, the US is the USSR, and China is the US?
Morning Journal reports (https://www.morningjournal.com/news/nation-world/china-vows-to-counter-us-deployment-of-midrange-arms-in/article_14e09460-557e-5397-8a15-ec9c1f5fd0e6.html):
“U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper said in Asia over the weekend that he wanted to deploy midrange conventional missiles in the Asia-Pacific within months.”
We withdrew from the INF treaty last week. Looks like we had prepared to breakout.
China’s man-made island bases in the South China Sea may not be “unsinkable aircraft carriers” after all.
Also, 5,000 kilometers from South Korea exposes China to potentially unacceptable severe repercussions, if they engage in aggression against South Korea from the North.
A strategic surprise for China. A whole new calculus.
Who in Asia wants to buy some China-killing missiles?
I want to know who the manufacturers are, to buy stock.
In fact a totally legit comparison.
“Chinas mouth is getting more than annoying...”
They have been talking trash about how their DongFeng (East Wind) missiles would exclude American aircraft carriers from Asia.
Lets now sell, loan and give such capability to all the enemies that China has accumulated in the region.
China’s new Navy strategically neutered. The Chinese homeland (and the Party elites themselves) in danger of counter-strikes from all their neighbors.
It could give the Indian Navy the edge, it could give South Korea and Taiwan the deterrent to make the communists pause. Japan would have a deterrent counter-strike against North Korean (really Chinese) provocations. The Philippines could level the Chinese base on Scarborough Shoal overnight.
So sorry china. north korea has missiles so the rest of your neighbors must have them also.
“So sorry China. North Korea has missiles so the rest of your neighbors must have them also.”
Good point.
China started proliferating Intermediate Range missiles first.
Lets get a few tens of thousands deployed among the Nations surrounding China, and have a few hundred nuclear warheads capable of being mounted on them shuffling around, to keep them guessing. Some mobile systems, some ship mounted, some air launched, some from subs...
No sleep for Chinese war planners!
So we annex a couple of atolls in the pacific and put them there.
Also, it’s only 2,500 miles from Guam to Beijing. Much of China is closer.
“So we annex a couple of atolls in the Pacific and put them there.”
We will likely have a bunch of options - as well as ship-launched, sub-launched and air-launched weapons.
China is surrounded by countries that it has been bullying.
Some strong allies under serious threat, might offer basing. Some (Japan maybe) might buy the systems themselves. Others might host ships and aircraft in their ports and airbases.
Everybody in the region needs the capability to deter China. This will be a Godsend to them.
Its a real game changer - if they get rolled out for real.
“We will likely have a bunch of options - as well as ship-launched, sub-launched and air-launched weapons.”
There’s just no substitute for nuke IRBMs.
A MODERN Pershing II. Hypersonic.
Game Changer, indeed.
“Theres just no substitute for nuke IRBMs.
A MODERN Pershing II. Hypersonic.”
I hope they have been developing something in secret, in preparation for breakout. Part of the early Trump defense buildup, was a renewal of our nuclear stockpile.
Even just pulling the Pershing II blueprints out and setting up a production line would be a serious capability.
China’s main defense is tunneling (they are the world leaders), so some deep penetration capability would be particularly worrisome to the elites.
“Also, its only 2,500 miles from Guam to Beijing.”
Yeah, but aren’t these missiles pretty heavy? Guam might tip over.
And the North Koreans also have Nukes so they should also Nuke up, that would level the playing field.
Yep - China is the big, whiny baby these days..got caught stealing cookies, got her hand slapped and now are whining like Peter Strzok...”I shouldn’t be punished for my bad behavior....WAAAAAHHHH! I’m gonna sue or do other whiny stuff!”
China has nothing but enemies surrounding it.
I’m generally not in favor of putting missiles around a nation we don’t like, because Cuba is still there.
China is pushing it’s luck though.
Agreed...
