So he said it himself that he had serious and chronic mental illness, yet he was able to get to a gun range?
Do most gun ranges have any restrictions on people with histories of mental illness?
I would think, for everyone’s safety at the gun range, that they would have such restrictions.
That’s the last thing you need in such an environment.

No. There are no such possible checks.

That's not their business.

For everyone's safety at a gun range they have range officers.

You think a nut is going to go to a gun range - where everyone else has guns - and try to shoot the place up? He wouldn't get off a second round.

Nope. You pay them, they check your weapons and rounds, and they hand you eyes and ears and you start shooting.

There’s really no possible way to “check” anything at a range

Have you ever been to a gun range? What do you think they have a staff psychologist that checks out prospective customers? Do believe a mental defective looking to get range time would give an honest answer if asked? Where in the reports has it been stated that a psychologist/psychiatrist diagnosed Bett's with mental illness? Just because this girl says he told her he was disturbed doesn't mean he was diagnosed.........which clearly he wasn't if he was able to legally purchase his weapon.

And as for not letting mentally disturbed people on a range, that would mean about half the cops I know would be prohibited.

Actually I agree mentally disturbed should not be allowed on a range but damned if I can figure out how to do that by looking at them, hey maybe would could make them wear a gold star or something on their clothing?

“Do most gun ranges have any restrictions on people with histories of mental illness?”

Back in the mid 80’s AIDs was becoming recognized. Because of the AIDs epidemic, medical privacy started to became a major issue and somehow privacy for those with mental illness became part of that argument.(Guess it made for a better sell.)

(Since then we got the HITECH act that gave us electronic medical records. The lobbyist for HITECH were the data mining people. I guess eventually we will have no medical privacy.)

As it stands now, I don’t know of any exemptions to the Federal privacy rules where by mental illness can even be reported to authorities let alone gun retailers.
