It must be noted that not all of them entered prison as moslems. There's a huge,vigorous effort by moslems to recruit prisoners. And that makes sense...who's better qualified for “jihad” than filthy,worthless hood rats?

Overrepresentation may be partially a product of the success of Islamic Dawah or missionary activity in prisons. Islamic prison Dawah has produced many converts and at least some terror plots. And it may serve to explain high Muslim prison numbers in some states, but not necessarily in others.

This is the part I was looking for. I think this is a big part of the issue and how much duress exists in this "recruiting"?

Prison would seem to be a place for a lot of spiritual conversation.

I used to work in prison ministry in King County WA. A LOT of inmates were converting to Islam, and that’s “black Muslims”. The reason is simple: Islam controls every aspect of your life. Some of them realized they need that sort of control. Also, if you obey all those rules, and your life “still sucks”, you can blame it on other influences, as Muslims blame their problems on Israel or the US.

How many converted in prison? How many are members of the Nation of Islam? Of those who converted which ones did it as a way of getting protection/benefits from other Muslims with actual faith mattering very little?
