Two or more WITNESSES? Witnesses are the absolute LEAST reliable evidence! There is so, so much science showing the unreliablility of memory, and people’s propensity to misremember and be easily influenced.
Just checking wikipedia, there are eight specific examples of people who were put to death that were later found innocent in the US. There is also this study: https://www.pnas.org/content/111/20/7230 which estimates 4% of people currently on death row are innocent, and these statistics are deliberately incredibly conservative.
Given that 1500 people have been executed in the US since th 70’s, a 4% wrongful conviction rate would mean 60 innocent men and women put to death.
You may feel differently, but that’s too many for me.
