”I HAD A LOVE ONCE“

The last years of Harold’s life were not spent basking in the glory of his success. He became distraught when he lost his wife Anya to a brain tumor. For years, Anya had been having difficulty with speech and motor control. The once celebrated model had become almost unrecognizable. Yet Harold’s love for her remained constant. Anya died on March 9, 1970.

After her death, Harold lost interest in life. The extrovert who loved to socialize withdrew from friends and family. Depressed over Anya’s passing, having difficulty sleeping and suffering from Parkinson’s Disease, he rarely went out or attended performances.

There was one last project, “Clippety Clop and Clementine,” a 1973 TV musical that never got off the ground. This was to be Harold’s last song, lyrics written by himself, a quiet tribute to his late wife.

On April 23, 1986, Harold Arlen succumbed to cancer. He died quietly at home with his family in his apartment on Central Park West. He was 81.

Early in the summer of 1966, the machinists' union called a strike against several major airlines that lasted several weeks during the peak summer travel season. And I was caught up in it. To get from Germany to California, we had to take a Trans-Caribbean Airlines plane to New York, where after a couple days we found a flight to Dallas. Three days later, we finally got to Los Angeles via Delta Airlines, then a small regional airline serving mostly the South.

Shortly after we got home, Boss Radio 93 KHJ was playing this tune, with which I could certainly relate.
