IRS fugitive John McAfee sent to UK after stint in Dominican jail

John McAfee of antivirus software fame has arrived in London from the Dominican Republic, where he had been detained for several days with his wife and several others for entering the Caribbean nation with a cache of weapons on his yacht, his lawyer said Friday.

Authorities “asked him where he wanted to go, and he decided on London,” his attorney Candido Simon told Reuters.

News of his arrival in the UK came two days after McAfee, 73, the eponymous founder of the PC software security giant, said on Twitter that he was released “after four days of confinement” along with five other people, including his wife, Janice.

“I was well treated. My superiors were friendly and helpful. In spite of the helpful circumstances, we’ve decided to move on,” the British-born tech guru said in a tweet Wednesday.

From the article...

“Can a person run for, and be, President of the United States and Prime Minister of Great Britain simultaneously? Yes. Absolutely. Without question. But I believe I am one of the few people still alive who could qualify for the combined position,” he Tweeted.

On July 22, he wrote that they had been “at sea 4 and a half in rough weather. Nearing port. All is well. Will be back in the saddle shortly.”

McAfee said he couldn’t wait to “get off of this God forsaken boat that lost air conditioning and water 18 hours into the trip. None of us have bathed for 5 days.”

If he had bought a 50-foot sailing catamaran, he'd still be out there, and happy. Totally wrong boat for an escape. Big sport fishers guzzle diesel, so they have short range, and they roll like pigs when they are not up on plane (guzzling fuel). They basically need to run from marina to marina, putting on 100s of gallons of diesel at every stop.

You are totally right.
But a sailboat takes skill. And these guys don’t know how to buy the right boat is totally true. This isn’t a blue water ocean vessel. If only he’d have done a tiny bit of research he’d have found 200 better choices even if he kept in the motor instead of sail realm.

Well I am pretty sure some Politician in the Dom Rep owned his boat now. They confiscate boats for a bullet necklace in the Caribbean.

All modern sailing cats in his price range come with twin diesels that can power the boats at speed, but with many times greater range than a diesel-guzzling sportfish. GPS/Chart plotters make navigation as easy as driving from city to city on the interstate. You don’t even need to steer except in port docking, and then the wide spread between the props makes that simple too.

But marina visits would be rare, since cats in that range can carry a serious RIB on davits. Anchor anywhere in the Carib or Bahamas, and just blend in with the cruising crowd. Nobody would have given an old guy with a beard two looks when he came ashore in his RIB to get groceries. His cat at anchor would be like all the rest. He could have done this for years.

He could have powered everywhere on autopilot, and gradually learned sailing, or just hired any of thousands of for-hire boat skippers in the Caribbean to run the boat while they taught him sailing. As soon as I saw that big sportfisher, I knew he just didn’t have a clue about living on salt water. Not a clue. Once they ran him out of his estate in Belize, it was just a matter of time. So he rolls into a big marina in the DomRep (with weapons) and is busted. No surprise there.

His treatment was much different than Epstein. Gotta love justice in the USA.

Why were they able to notice that he had weapons? Sounds like he's not much for planning. You enter port inspection ready. Always.

25 years ago when I was in Panama I knew a guy who bought a 50 foot Buddy Davis that looked just like that boat from the Costa Rican’s for $150,000. It had been confiscated. It was a beautiful boat. As you know, about boats, something is always busted. When it’s the AC in the tropics as pretty as it is it ain’t gonna be pleasant.

The MWR Navy people rented out an 80 foot boat they “found” full of marihuana that was interesting. I looked like a huge Maine lobster boat, had a single 6 cylinder diesel, and a big enough fuel tank to go around the world. No A/C, though. 12 of us rented it for a 4 day Marlin trip.

Forget about A/C underway (off of shore power). It’s like trying to keep an igloo in the sahara. Underway or at anchor, open hatches, awnings, 12v fans etc are all you need.

I rented a sailboat from Navy MWR and took my family on a 4 day trip to the Perlas for sailboat races over New Year’s. The expats down there used to do it every year. Don’t know if they still do. Nights were tough. Laying at anchor of Contadora no breeze, 90 degrees, > 90 degree humidity. A few years later I had a 30 foot Open Express with twin V-8s and we cruised around the Chesapeake for a week. It had A/C. In the vending with the A/C running it was comfortable but every surface was just running with condensation. The best answer I discovered with all the boats I owned and was on was don’t spend the night on the boat. (By the way, I won the race back to Panama City!)

If you have to anchor behind high islands like Las Perlas, the wind can be killed, then the 12v fans are critical. In the Bahamas, low islands means secure anchoring but with a breeze.

Exactly correct. And as long as you aren’t suspicious and are nice to everyone, nobody cares that you are coming into port. Those weapons should have been dumped at sea. This is what Epstein’s escape is probably like. A boat out of some nameless marina someplace and poof gone. If he ever gets out he is headed out quiet and unnoticed. I bet he has 3x more fake/real passports and a stash of cash with enablers to get him gone. Worst thing he could do is head for a border via car or a plane out. Those are easy to stop. But boats, in any marina, come and go, and nobody cares.

One of my favorite places to fish from my fishing boat was Tres Pillas de Arroz. As you know, it is the last land you see until the Marquesas. I used to love seeing the sail boats anchored there gathering up the motivation to push off. The fishing around there was fantastic, though.
