The Baltimore Sun penned a scathing editorial following President Donald Trump's claims that Baltimore "is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess." According to Trump, if Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) spent more time in his district, it would no longer be a "dangerous and filthy place."
According to the Sun, Trump's comments were geared towards Cummings because he's "been a thorn in the president's side."
From the editorial:
Its not hard to see whats going on here. The congressman has been a thorn in this presidents side, and Mr. Trump sees attacking African American members of Congress as good politics, as it both warms the cockles of the white supremacists who love him and causes so many of the thoughtful people who dont to scream. President Trump bad-mouthed Baltimore in order to make a point that the border camps are clean, efficient & well run," which, of course, they are not unless you are fine with all the overcrowding, squalor, cages and deprivation to be found in what the Department of Homeland Securitys own inspector-general recently called a ticking time bomb."
In pointing to the 7th, the president wasnt hoping his supporters would recognize landmarks like Johns Hopkins Hospital, perhaps the nations leading medical center. He wasnt conjuring images of the U.S. Social Security Administration, where they write the checks that so many retired and disabled Americans depend upon. It wasnt about the beauty of the Inner Harbor or the proud history of Fort McHenry. And it surely wasnt about the economic standing of a district where the median income is actually above the national average. No, he was returning to an old standby of attacking an African American lawmaker from a majority black district on the most emotional and bigoted of arguments. It was only surprising that there wasnt room for a few classic phrases like you people or welfare queens or crime-ridden ghettos or a suggestion that the congressman go back to where he came from.
What's interesting, however, is the Sun doesn't deny what President Trump said. They don't deny that their city is a rat-infested, trash-infested dump. They don't deny that Cummings has done absolutely nothing to help the district.
They're mad that Trump pointed out their city's short fallings. And, naturally, they point and say Trump is attacking Cummings because of his race. Heaven forbid a president cares about American citizens, regardless of race.
To make matters even more ironic, the newspaper believes Trump, of all people, could fix what's wrong with the Maryland city.
As heartening as it has been to witness public figures rise to Charm Citys defense on Saturday, from native daughter House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Mayor Bernard C. Jack Young, we would above all remind Mr. Trump that the 7th District, Baltimore included, is part of the United States that he is supposedly governing. The White House has far more power to effect change in this city, for good or ill, than any single member of Congress including Mr. Cummings. If there are problems here, rodents included, they are as much his responsibility as anyones, perhaps more because he holds the most powerful office in the land.
The people of the 7th District should consider ousting Cummings and electing a representative who actually advocates for the interest of his or her constituents. If Trump tried to go in and make changes, local and state legislators would be up in arms. They'd say Trump was stepping on their toes and the executive branch was far exceeding their power.
It's a lose-lose scenario.
The people of Baltimore deserve better. No one deserves to live in a trash-filled, rodent-infested city while the area's representatives live the posh high life. That's the ultimate slap in the face.
And, in case you were wondering what's going on in Baltimore, a local resident, going only by the name Michelle, explained what she's seen and experienced. And it's not pretty.
Yes, so scathing it totally misses the mark
Typical left-wing phony outrage. while ignoring the real issues
in the real world actions speak louder than words
24 years with Cummings and a #ShitholeCity
Is there anyone in Baltimore who can even read?
Sounds shockingly similar to the response when Trump called certain countries “hellholes”.
Yup. I noticed the sky is blue. Thats racist!
Does this mean that Baltimore is a lovely, safe, clean, successful city with citizens who get along and have block parties regularly?
No, Baltimore Sun, contributor to the problem.....everything said about the city is TRUE.
Sun, you will just have to live with it.
Number One at the top of the list — President Trump specifically made his comments about the DISTRICT that Rep. Elijah Cummings represents. He did not refer to the city but to the DISTRICT.
Amazing how they report their interpretations to start a debate rather than the actual words used.
Have been to Baltimore 3 times over the last 30 years - it has gotten worse each succeeding time. There is nothing in Baltimore that attracts me now - feel sorry for their baseball fans.
I dated a Philadelphia cop about 20 years ago.
I was planning a trip to Baltimore, Inner Harbor and he FORCEFULLY DISCOURAGED THAT, SAYING IT WAS THE DIRTIEST, MOST CRIME RIDDEN CITY IN THE COUNTRY.
I remember his saying that, because he was so adamant that I was startled.
Sounds like it got WORSE.
Randy Newman did a song about what a terrible place Baltimore is like thirty years ago. This is old, and I mean old, news.
My favorite Baltimore song is Streets of Baltimore, especially the Del McCoury version.
But these numbers tell the real tale.
Perhaps the Baltimore Sun is using the Democrat playbook of changing the subject to avoid the substance of the issue that Baltimore is more like the squalor of San Francisco and other third world cities. Perhaps the Sun is part and parcel of the vast left-wing conspiracy that has been dominating our politics for the past forty years.
Perhaps the Baltimore Sun does not want its readers to realize that their plight is the result of their own inaction to vote for representatives who actually care about them, offers effective policies, and keeps their promises.
Unfortunately the only card that the Baltimore Sun has, is their worn out and misused race card. Doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result is NOT smart.
Baltimore sun protects
If Cummings spent more time in the district, he wouldn’t make a dent, because nothing is all he’s good at. But if he spent more time in his district, that fact would then be starkly obvious.
Funny, because April 1861 showed how Baltimore was once against Federalization.
Today, theyd probably have a welcoming celebration/riot.
In two sentences the President has done more reporting on Baltimore than the Sun. And the Sun is in some ways culpable for the city’s state.
Zactly
Time for PDJT to ‘act like a LIB’ and
—as James Carville once said, drag a 50 dollar bill and no telling what you may find—
‘invite’ several Baltimorons to the White House to tell their own story of the neighborhoods.
Or, better yet, start giving speeches in selected inner city neighborhoods and encourage the denizens to act against the plantation owners.
Sure, they will call PDJT a racist, acting Hitleresque etc etc BUT , they already do .....
I wonder what ‘golden cow’ PDJT will openly expose to daylight this coming week - no sense letting the LIBs ‘relax’ on their (ahem) vacations...
But PDJT better be careful, they may TRY to impeach him...
Baltimore Sun is a left-wing waste of paper.
They could invite my parents cleaning woman. She had prescriptions cut off because of that famous burned and destroyed CVS, neighbors throwing diapers in her yard for her trash, half her house burned this year because of careless loser neighbors, son of friend killed last year, the list goes on. And she tries to be clean and neat in a half-decent rowhouse location.
