Dish Cuts Off 22 Disney-Owned Regional Sports Networks
The Wall Street Journal ^ | July 26, 2019 | Joe Flint

Dish Network Corp. has stopped carrying 22 regional sports networks owned by the Walt Disney Co. as negotiations over a new distribution contract broke down.

The channels, which went dark Friday morning on Dish and its direct-to-consumer streaming platform Sling, are the sports networks that Disney acquired in its $71.3 billion acquisition of the bulk of entertainment assets of 21st Century Fox earlier this year.

Disney is in the process of selling 21 of the regional sports networks to Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. in a deal valued at more than $10 billion. The one other channel—New York’s YES Network, which carries Yankee baseball—is being sold to group that includes the Yankees, Sinclair and Amazon.com Inc.

Disney retained an outside adviser to handle the negotiation of distribution fees paid by Dish for the sports networks’ programming. A spokeswoman for the networks said an offer that would have retained the current terms in a new contract was rejected.

“The regional sports TV business model is broken,” said Andy LeCuyer, Dish senior vice president of programming. “It relies on the majority of customers subsidizing the slim minority who actually watch these channels.”

Sports channels “should be like a ticket to the ballpark,” he said. “Fans who want to watch the game should be the ones who pay for it.”

These cable and satellite TV wars are getting ridiculous. DISH and Sling, without notice, blacked out Fox Sports Networks across the country. That means no more Major League Baseball for many cities. This action follows recent black outs on DISH, DirectTV, Meridith (for CBS), and many others. Clearly the business models for cable TV, Satellite TV, streaming, and even broadcast content delievered by other providers are broken. The customers, who pay the bills have no say and won't until content is sold a la carte.

I find myself having adapted quite nicely to being 96% TV free.

Let the greedy thieving bastards cut each others’ throats.
Life goes on . . .

>>The customers, who pay the bills have no say and won’t until content is sold a la carte.<<

AT&T here and I am POd they cut all the CBS stations. I can’t cut the cord b/c too many of the stations I like are unavailable except through satellite or cable. I won’t do cable b/c I don’t want cables in all my rooms (ATT is wireless) and Dish requires a dish which I must put on my deck here at my condo.

It sucks completely.

I agree. Should apply to CNN too.

Good for you, and now go away so the that rest of us can argue about baseball.

100% is even better. You still send them money every month unless you cut them off totally. They want you dead.

I couldn’t care less as long as they continue to carry “Naked and Afraid”

Someday I might see something.

I would be fine with this and I would pay for baseball and selected football, but not for basketball, soccer, or transgender track and field. Unfortunately, you can't do that, you have to buy a "package"

Thanks, I’ll take a look. But, my problem, with millions of others have bandwidth issues out in the boondocks that restricts streaming options. Depends on the service, location and satellite internet connection.

“These cable and satellite TV wars are getting ridiculous. DISH and Sling, without notice, blacked out Fox Sports Networks across the country.”

3 years ago this month, we cut our regular Comcast Cable and went to Comcast Business with an excellent internet re speed and reliability.

We went to Sling Blue because they carry the SF Giants with a great crews during the pro baseball season.

Also, Sling Blue does not carry ESPN, ABC and Disney. So none of our $29 monthly fee goes to these anti Trump/America bastards.

As long as the Giants are playing or get in the playoffs. We will subscribe to Sling for each month. Come Oct. we cancel Sling.

We stopped watching any pro football, when the 49ers got infected with the Colon cancer.

Last but not least, we are saving about $200/month versus regular Comcast or AT&T.

I use a similar website and agree, you must have VPN and not just the free service.

There is not a show or sporting event that I cannot watch.

The Cable/Satellite TV business model is history (in part because of government meddling — taxes and fees — the leech is killing the host).

Those entities who are diversified and offer access to the Internet will survive because people will still need access to the Internet.

I am worried that the ISPs, in conjunction with the government, will start piling on fees for data access too.

It is a true Free Market option and we can stop and start a service immediately and ONLY pay for the services that we want and none of the extra garbage.

Have you looked at Philo. It is $16 per mo and may include your shows. We found that Sling was too expensive and not a very good value at $35 per month (with the DVR function).

Tubi is a free service with advertisements and has 1000s of movies and shows. Good competition for Netflix.

Happy streaming.

Disney is trying to distract everyone from their pedophillic leadership history. Good for dish.
My kids were not allowed to watch those kids shows featuring teens with boob jobs.
Now we know why.

Been a Giant fan since the Polo Grounds days.
They have a really tough road ahead to make either wildcard spot.
But the last three weeks they've been the hottest team in baseball.

Their customers are still paying the same price. I left cable years ago and don’t miss it. With tons of apps on Amazon firestick, I get more tv now that I ever did, and don’t pay a dime.
