Apple today has confirmed that it will acquire Intels smartphone modem business in a transaction valued at $1 billion. The deal is expected to close during the fourth quarter of 2019 and is subject to regulatory approval.
Through this acquisition, Apple will beef up its wireless technology patent portfolio to over 17,000 patents. Apple also says that approximately 2,200 Intel employees will join Apple, as will Intels equipment and leases that pertain to the smartphone modem business.
Apple and Intel have signed an agreement for Apple to acquire the majority of Intels smartphone modem business. Approximately 2,200 Intel employees will join Apple, along with intellectual property, equipment and leases. The transaction, valued at $1 billion, is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2019, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions.Furthermore, Intel will retain the ability to development modems for non-smartphone applications, such as PCs, internet-of-things devices, and autonomous vehicles. This doesnt necessarily mean that Apple couldnt also develop those modems.
Apple is believed to be in the process of building its own in-house modems, and this acquisition of Intel will likely significantly help those efforts. Prior to this acquisition, Apple is said to have had between 1,000 and 2,000 employees working on modem chips for future iPhones. This means that Apples team has more than doubled through its deal with Intel.

@swordmaker
Apple only really needs about 20 people from Intel.
The rest are gone.
Hardware still matters.
Buy Intel and IBM.
“The rest are gone.”
Apple wanted the tech and patents.
Yeah, they’re dead meat.
I think it’s more than that. They’ll probably hire about 1,000 people from Intel—mostly to develop their own 5G radio modem chips.
hardware needs to be bought from places outside China’s control, preferably here at home.
This means that Apples team has more than doubled through its deal with Intel.
...
What it means is half the team can now be fired.
A design team for a 5G modem?
Apple already has a 5G design team on 14 and 7nm TSMC process.
Your average Intel full microprocessor design team is about 1000.
All it will take is about 20 people to convert the design from Intel design rules to TSMC and redesign.
Not trivial but for sure doesn’t need 1000 more people.
AMD is a Hold on stock until $50/share, currently it is at $33.96
Meaning you should buy and HOLD AMD until it gets to $50
I think that is a pretty good deal if it works out.
