A fake presidential seal appeared behind President Trump onstage at an event for conservative student group Turning Point USA this week.
The fake seal was only briefly visible as Trump walked onstage, replaced by the authentic one for the remainder of the speech, but an aide to TPUSA has reportedly been fired over what was either a startling error or a deliberate prank.
Here are four differences between the genuine seal and the one that appeared behind the president on Tuesday.
The eagle
While the presidential seal features a standard eagle, the one behind Trump this week featured a double-headed eagle. Double-headed eagles are typically associated with empires and have appeared in other countries iconography as well, including the coats of arms of the Austrian Empire and Serbia.
Resemblance to the Russian federation coat of arms
In addition, the eagle makes the false seal bear a resemblance to the coat of arms of the Russian federation, which is itself based on the coat of arms used in Czarist Russia. The original double-headed eagle coat of arms was discontinued after the Russian Revolution in 1917 in favor of the recognizable Soviet hammer and sickle imagery but the eagle was restored in 1992 after the dissolution of the USSR.
The motto
The standard presidential seal bears the national motto E pluribus unum, Latin for out of many, one. The fake seal behind Trump at the TPUSA event instead featured the phrase 45 es un títere, Spanish for 45 is a puppet. Trump famously pushed back against his then-opponent Hillary Clintons characterization of him as a puppet of Russian president Vladimir Putin at the 2016 presidential debates.
The eagles claws
While the eagle on the real seal bears several arrows in its right talon, the one on the doctored seal is bearing golf clubs, an apparent reference to Trumps frequent visits to the several golf clubs he owns. Trump has spent 210 days at his golf properties while in office, according to NBC's tracker.
Looks like they forgot to take down Obama’s presidential seal with all those golf clubs on it.
Question is, who did it? Someone on PDJT’s staff? Quietly fired? Who was in charge of the video behind him?
“It’s not the prank, it’s the ability of someone to get close enough to the event to tamper with the equipment that should be concerning.”
Excellent point, PJ!
One of the eagle's claws holds golf clubs, the other holds a talon-full of money.
Obviously, they got hacked by somebody.
Last I checked, you’re absolutely right. But the MSM has a double standard when it comes to Trump. What a shock.
It's bad that Trump's people didn't notice it but it almost certainly wasn't something they did.
More likely, it was somebody in the group that he was talking to (Turning Point USA) or, less likely, the hotel that hosted the event (Marriott Marquis).
Turning Point has already fired somebody and said it was due to a rushed image search.
The film tribute was also supposed to have been crummy.
Sabotage or stupidity? Sometimes it can be hard to tell the two apart.
Turning Point isn’t a bad name. Rev. David Jeremiah, whom I consider “the thinking man’s preacher” has a radio and TV ministry named Turning Point.
True and the Golfer in Chief did not OWN the courses or nearby homes. President Trump can eork wherever he is, but certainly needs the breaks.
I recall going to the last campaign appearance by VP-Candidate Dick Cheney in Pleasanton, California just days before the election in 2000.
We all went through airport-like screening to get into the Alameda County Fairgrounds. During the event, we saw the Secret Service personnel walking around. You couldn't miss them; they were the people talking into their sleeves.
There was this one guy... he was wearing a trench coat. Yes, it was November in northern California, but it was still 70 degrees at night. There were balloons tied up at various places, and one set of balloons was blocking the view from our standing section. Some people were shouting the to the guy in the trench coat to get rid of the balloons. He glanced at us, almost made a move to comply, but then turned around and walked away.
We all assumed that he was the guy with the long barrel weapons. The mobile tank.
We put up with the balloons in our view. A couple of the girls in front of us got to talk on local TV. :-)
