I had an acquantance who was a child in Shanghai when the communists took over China, and her family fled. She returned in the early 90s to see her home - there were 6 families living in it.
My wife is from Taiwan. Her family left Shanghai after WWII. We went back and found the old house. It had been divided so four families could live in it. Of course there was still only one kitchen and one bathroom.
