Vast stretches of Earths northern latitudes are on fire right now. Hot weather has engulfed a huge portion of the Arctic, from Alaska to Greenland to Siberia. Thats helped create conditions ripe for wildfires, including some truly massive ones burning in remote parts of the region that are being seen by satellites.
All told, northern fires released as much carbon dioxide in June as the entire country of Sweden does in a year, according to data crunched by the European Unions Copernicus program. The agency said the wildfire activity is unprecedented amidst what was, incidentally, the hottest June ever recorded for the planet with the Arctic particularly sweltering. All that carbon dioxide released by fires represents one of the scarier feedback loops of climate change as hot weather ensures more fires, which releases carbon dioxide and makes climate change worse. The boreal forest that rings the northern portion of the world is witnessing a period of wildfire activity unseen in at least 10,000 years, and this summer is another worrying datapoint.

Prior to about 20 years ago there were no satellites looking for this stuff so we didn't see it. And the last time anyone saw it was when humans were crossing the Bering land bridge 10,000 years ago or more. Thus the statement is true, but not in the manner they imply. But it is a pretty good dramatic lie, isn't it?

With “vast swaths” of the arctic on fire the ice breaker should be able to push forward now. Or not.
Hey! Stop standing around taking pictures and call 911!
Yup. Lots of things “appear” to be worse now due to the instant news cycle. Things we find out now would never have been heard across the country a couple of decades ago. As far as the land bridge, just “native Americans” returning from central Asia. Or something. :-)
[[And we know this ... how?]]
Satellite data from 10,000 years ago of course
LOL Agreed!
... did we have SUVs and ACs then?...
I think the main point here is, if climate in these northern regions is changing and drying out enough to where NATURAL sources such as lightning is causing fires where it was often too cold or wet to do so, it proves climate change is not within our control or causation.
People should study climatology and learn about the changes in the earths Climate, which I am sure never stop. But forcing humans to make dumb changes in their lives or force them to in some way sacrifice because the climate changes, is by this very example once more seen to be ridiculous.
Mother Nature burns who and what she will.
Maybe getting rid of all that growth will let the permafrost cool down a bit and avert disaster as the planet melts. just a theory.
Oh no! Combined with the volcano that went off somewhere this reduces our time left to less than 10 years.
It’s actually the hottest June in the galaxy.
There are alien records of this from 10,000 years ago, stored at Area 51.
Since there are few humans involved, would say that is ‘Gods Way’ of thinning the forest and prepare for a better regrowth.
Mustn’t screw with Mother Nature....she has some POWERFUL friend(s)
Damn nature! You scary!
“recorded” Just sayin’..........
Hmmmm. Ask an ecowanker what was growing in the redwood forests before redwoods.
Greenland burning? I didn’t know rock and ice were flammable. I lived in Alaska for many years and have traveled in the Yukon some. What’s burning is the scrubby spruce trees that cover the areas just south of the Arctic Circle. You’d have to tie 3 or 4 of these together to make an ugly Christmas tree. This happens every summer. Does this propagandist author know what the Arctic Circle defines? It defines the imaginary line north of which trees do not grow and the Sun does not rise above the horizon on December 21st. Tundra does not burn.
I want to know exactly WHAT is burning if the firs are in the Arctic.
