Watching the Moon landing 50 years ago from his comfortable Paris home, Yves Beon could barely contain himself at the spectacle unfolding on TV.
Dozens of white-shirted scientists and engineers at the Apollo Mission Control Center in Houston, Texas, were on their feet, many waving flags, cheering at a triumph that was enhancing American prestige and unleashing an ocean of apple-pie patriotism.
Yet Beon, a hero of the French Resistance, was spitting venom at the screen that night and, had he been alive to see last weeks documentaries repeating the footage of Neil Armstrongs giant leap for mankind, his reaction would have been incandescent.
Amid the jubilation half a century ago, no one bothered to point out that Americas scientists had been given a huge helping hand. Or that the Moon landing was, in fact, the brainchild of German scientists led by Wernher von Braun, Kurt Debus and Arthur Rudolph. Or that all three were Nazi war criminals, guilty of mass murder.

Not really sure, but wasn’t Adm. Karl Doenitz who signed the surrender, a member of the National Socialist Workers Party ?
Blah blah blah. Another attempt to diminish a historical accomplishment. Yes, we stood on the shoulders of giants. When hasn’t that been the case in human history?
Oppenheimer was a first gen American.
He had to learn German (to study theoretical physics in Germany) on his own, his parents didn’t speak it in their home while he was growing up.
EVERYONE knew that von Braun had worked with NASA. But they are digging this up now to throw more dirt at America. Because, you know, Trump is President.
Exactly. More TDS on display. Trash the moon landing... because Trump. Heatwave... because Trump.
So did the Russians. We captured Werner Von Braun who willingly came to the United States along with many other German Rocket Scientist. This history is well known.
While getting these scientist we were also capturing German Rockets, the V1 and V2 come to mind.
The Russians were doing the same thing as they were conquering Germany from the East.
Robert Oppenheimer was born in New York City in 1904. His father was an immigrant from Germany in 1888.
Roosevelt
Truman
Kennedy
Johnson
Carter
Clinton
Obama
All democRaTS who protected, enabled and praised Nazi scientists for the US Space Program.
With Britain being an ideological soulmate of the Soviet Union, I suppose they would have rather seen their Russian brothers get there first...with their 24 engine rocket.
Everyone knew this. The US and the USSR competed to get the Nazi rocket scientists, because they had the expertise.
So ‘effin what?! They repented and made a new life for themselves in America. End of story.
It was a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation.”
There was a race between the US Army and the Russian Army to capture the German scientists for their rocket programs, national survival was believed to be at stake. I remember seeing Werner von Braun on tv, he was recognized as the reason we had an Apollo program and a moon landing. Hannah Reitsch, a war ace and Hitler’s pilot, had lunch with JFK at the White House in 1962. The angry, condescending British press never publishes much of King Edward the 8th, a known Nazi supporter who was Hitler’s designate to be put on the throne in London if they successfully invaded Britain. Sort of odd that eighty years after Hess flew to England in 1940, the files remain sealed. Not too interested in those, are you Daily Mail?
The Nazi missile builders acknowledged that the work of Robert Goddard was the starting point for their work during WWII. That knowledge was not exactly all developed in Germany.
Oh, fear not, Brits. Just think of the great leap forward you will achieve through the aid of your Muslim scientists!
I aim for the stars. His autobiography. All you really hit was London,Herr Braun.
Yep. Talk about blowing it
And where did Von Braun get his ideas from.
A guy the US government shut down when his rocket reached outer space.
Goddard
GB can fight its own pirates.
