THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
HAROLD ARLEN
A STAR IS BORN: THE MAN THAT GOT AWAY
This 2000 recording puts a different spin on the tune. Its more intimate.
Audra McDonald: The Man That Got Away
Tune in next weekend as we finish the story of Harold Arlen and his contribution to the Great American Songbook.

Well, next weekend ends Harold Arlen. I have rail events for the weekend after that, and then I have to consider whether Richard Rodgers or Sammy Cahn should go next.

This song by BJ, is a waltz (123 123 123)
But I just LOVE his singing here.
At the end where he sings I could cry, it is for weeping.
You can almost feel the pain in it.
I know he struggled for years with alcoholism (and finally got clean and sober), maybe that’s why it sounds so heart felt.

Anything in 3/4 time was a rarity from the 1950s onward. The 6/8 slow dance tempo was common, but not 3/4.
I recall that this was his first hit, a genuine Country crossover.

One of my favorite groups. Contrapuntal harmony and fine production. Only Michelle is still alive.
