Years ago there was a young guy in my company who hailed from Columbia SA .. nice guy, hard worker .. he eventually took the oath and became a U.S. Citizen ...
but even before being naturalized he would always quip (for a laugh): "I'm an American .. Columbia is in South America"

We would all laugh, because he was technically correct - South as well as Central are surnamed "America" -

Unfortunately, his naturalization corresponded with the 2000 election and he was all gung-ho about voting for Hillary (NY Senate) ... but that's neither here nor there ... the main point is that if this University wants to eliminate the word "America" then it would also have to apply to the entire western hemisphere continents, not just to the US of A ... let's see how they deal with THAT conundrum (as well as the name "Columbia")
