Yet, courtesy of Cliff Robertson and some creative screen writing, this son of a corrupt Wall Street manipulator and whiskey smuggler became an heroic icon of naval skill. It only seems natural that his little boy grew up to be an equally incompetent airplane pilot, ending up in the drink (pun intended) like Daddy and Uncle Ted.
