Ted Kennedy might have become president - Richard Nixon certainly thought the runt of the litter was going to be the Democrat nominee against him in 1972.
But the Kennedys' dreams of a restoration of "Camelot" were shattered 50 years ago this week, as Teddy's mother's 1967 Delmont 88 Oldsmobile plunged off a small bridge on Chappaquiddick Island into a tidal pond, drowning Mary Jo Kopechne.
Teddy killed the 28-year-old "girl," as he called her, and he was allowed to plead guilty to ... leaving the scene of an accident.
Not vehicular homicide, or drunk driving, or reckless driving, or driving without a license. How Kennedy was it? Just like his nephew, Joe Kennedy II, four years later turning over a Jeep on Nantucket and putting a 21-year-old woman in a wheelchair for life - young Joe was fined $100.
That's Kennedy justice in Massachusetts. In the halls of justice, the only justice is in the halls.

"You watch," Nixon told his aides in April 1971. "I predict something more is going to happen I mean, its just a matter of judgment. I mean, hes just gonna ... ."
Get drunk again. Nixon didn't even have to finish the sentence. For the rest of his life, Teddy never got the memo: Drinkin doubles dont make a party. What made Milwaukee famous made a loser out of him.
He tried to run for president once, in 1980, but he couldnt even come up with a coherent answer when an obsequious TV interviewer asked him why he wanted to follow in his brothers footsteps. Teddy obviously hadn't thought about much of anything beyond his next drink since ... Chappaquiddick.

A few years ago I,living about an hour from the courthouse where it was to be held, attended a court hearing in Connecticut in which Michael Skakel requested a new trial. I was sitting about 20 feet of him when he testified, under oath, that "two black guys" killed Martha Moxley. He also said that the family's live in tutor killed her. And...he said that his own brother killed her. I swear to God it's true. And this is the killer who's enlisted RFK,Jr (yah, the heroin addict) as a character witness. ROTFL! The Kennedy family on parade!
From your post I assume you're a woman. I'm a guy who finds certain women in showbiz to be attractive...but would never get within 50 feet of them for fear of the deadly viruses and bacteria they might be harboring.
At a construction progress meeting for his brother memorial library, Ted, as chair/president of the foundation was asked if he would approve the design and costvof the white concrete bollards between the approach road and the water of Dorchester Bay. He came to the meeting half drunk, propped up by his long time friend, Stephen Smith and blurted out, "...don't see why we need those, we all know how to swim." Ending with a slow turn each part with a shit eating grin on his face. Smith grabbed Ted''s elbow and guided him out of the conference room PDQ. Though a member of the project team, I was too junior to attend, but I did witness his hurried departure from the conference space and was told about what happened. Dead silence ensued.
It was only my deep and abiding respect for Arlington Cemetery, for all that it stands for, and my profound respect for 99% of the men who are buried there that I did not go over and take a p*ss on his grave when I had the chance.
There is credible evidence that Mary Jo suffocated rather than drowned. She was found with her head positioned in an air pocket that may well have contained enough air to keep her alive long enough for help to arrive. Unfortunately for Mary Jo, The Swimmer never summoned help.
Many copies on Amazon and other places on the net. A very detailed reporters account of how Teddy the Bloated escaped even a wrist slap in Massachusetts's courts.
Excellent book.
And, in a move VERY atypical for a Catholic in that day and age she was cremated.
I guess the family was pressured to avoid having it found out she was preggers with Teddy’s bastard.
I suppose once you’ve personally murdered a pregnant girlfriend to avoid embarrassment, consistently voting for taxpayers to pay for clinical abortions is a snap...
Ted Kennedy racked up the only kill in the War on Women...and for the left, it was okay!
Yes it is. Damore was another liberal who got mugged by history.
Did you have to? Now I need eye bleach!
How could he have grasped what he’d done? He was a selfish alcoholic, who only cared about himself, and his political career. A man with no conscience, and no values.
Congratulations on your upcoming Golden Anniversary!!
Lion of the Senate...blah blah blah
I stumbled over a case of gin and have been stumbling ever since... WC Fields
I found this book the most intriguing solution to the puzzle of what happened on that bridge. The whole Kennedy team was involved in hiding a drunken accident, but ended up turning it into murder.
Howie, at his best here.
And now I realize he didn’t even wreck his own car, it was his mother’s. You would think a U.S. Senator’s salary would have been sufficient to buy his own car, even back in 1969!
Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, unless your a Kennedy
I believe we don't know the true story. The swamp had it in for the Kennedy family for many reasons. They knew they couldn't get away with another assassination so they orchestrated a believable scenario to discredit Ted - not to say Ted wasn't doing a good job of that on his own. Ted had a history of cheating and drinking so fooling around with a girl was believable.
There was an entertainer who talked about the accident as a frame-up and he was immediately blackballed and never heard from again. His name was Mort something.
Then there was the 'accident' that John Jr. had. Why are Americans so gullible that they refuse to believe our government bumps people off all the time.
