Congress has abdicated to the Executive. Nearly every law written, agency of government, initiative and program created by an act of Congress relies on the Executive to administer. Congress comes in after the fact with “oversight” but then only when some scandal comes to light or when one party uses something as advantage over the other. And even in their oversight capacity, they generally do nothing to improve the process or punish bad actors. Oversight almost never results in changes to the law or reduction or reallocation of funding. The woman who rubber-stamped Mohammed Atta’s visa renewal (without him even asking for a renewal) was given a promotion. Lois Lerner was allowed to retire. Abuse at the DOJ & FBI goes unpunished even with the GOP in charge of Congress. They are do nothing. And maybe we are better off for it at the moment because Congress especially the House is designed around political parties and electioneering not governing. But ultimately we need a Congress that works for the best interests of the country, not the best interests of the party, fundraising and elections.
