Provocations: Climate change mass hysteria

The ancients had professionals who were skilled at looking into the future, or who said they were.

They were called soothsayers. They had different skill sets for practicing their profession.

Some specialized in "haruspicy." That is, they examined the flight of birds. Then, based on the patterns they detected, they advised political leaders on the best public-policy course to follow.

Others practiced "extispicy." That is, they poked around in the entrails of sacrificed animals to see what the future held.

Then there were those professionals who practiced a branch of soothsaying called "cephalomancy." They examined the shape of skulls. Usually goats or donkeys.

They all made their prognostications with great confidence, if with mixed results.

Now all these thousands of years later, augury — the "science" of spotting omens — continues to flourish.

Today our soothsayers use computer modelling instead of animal entrails or skulls.

The modern soothsayers have PhDs, white coats and generous government and foundation grants. They tug their chins, furrow their brows and tell us we're on the way to hell in a handbasket.

They mean hell literally. Human insistence on such modern frivolities as automobiles, electricity and refrigeration is turning

Earth into one big parched Death Valley, they tell us.

This is the doomsayer division of soothsaying.

Today the doomsayers are telling us that unless we get rid of fossil fuels pronto, our goose is cooked. And everything else on the globe cooked with it.

This, however, is a somewhat new product of doom they're peddling, updated fairly recently. Not that long ago, the doomsayers were telling us that what we had to worry about was the deep freeze, not the broiler.

Lots of good references with in the body of the article at the link. It would have been nice if the author included some linked footnotes for some of the quotes and references though.

OK!! Everybody pay attention!
Lesson for today:
1. The sun is 1,300,000 times as big as the earth.
2. The sun is a giant nuclear furnace that controls the climates of all its planets.
3. The earth is one of the sun’s planets.
4. The earth is a speck in comparison to the size of the sun.
5. Inhabitants of the earth are less than specks.
Study Question: How do less-than-specks in congress plan to control the sun?

‘The ancients had professionals who were skilled at looking into the future, or who said they were’

this highlights the root problem of just about every body of human study and learning; it tends to become institutionalized and thus corrupted to confer influence and power to those who learn to game the system from the start...organized religion is a primary offender in this, schools as well, and, unfortunately, science is not exempt either...where coercion exists, through punishment or fear mongering, to accept a system of beliefs not founded on one’s rationale, but on the pronouncements of experts, there also is found the deliberate diminishing of the human pride and intellect...
