Lance Cpls. Byron Darnell Law II and David Javier Salazar-Quintero, based in Camp Pendleton, Calif., were arraigned Monday in federal court on charges of transporting undocumented immigrants for financial gain, accused of taking jobs from recruiters and following instructions from unknown people in Mexico to make extra cash on the side.
...
In this case, the Marines fell under suspicion on July 3 after a Border Patrol agent saw a black vehicle momentarily park in the dirt median of Interstate 8 near Jacumba Hot Springs, Calif. Then, he spotted footprints in the dirt seeming to lead toward the car, according to a federal complaint...
The agent radioed his colleagues to look out for the black BMW, and in a matter of minutes the Marines were pulled over and asked for papers. The three men in the back seat, each from Mexico, admitted they were in the country illegally, according to the complaint.
...
... Law said Salazar-Quintero called to ask if hed like to make $1,000 to pick up an undocumented immigrant along Interstate 8 and drop him off at a McDonalds parking lot in Del Mar, Calif. Law said he agreed. To find the immigrant, Salazar-Quintero took directions from a man in Mexico, since he spoke Spanish, and located him on the shoulder, the complaint says. They finished the job, but didnt get paid for it.
So they set out for another job the next day, Law said, and this time Salazar-Quintero said his contact promised they would be paid.
Instead, they got arrested
The three immigrants that Law and Salazar-Quintero allegedly tried to assist told authorities they expected to pay $8,000 to be smuggled into the United States, though its unclear whom they were paying.

Two bucks betting on either one of them running for Dem representative in the near future .....
Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
Lance Corporal, E-3, driving a BMW would be suspicious all by itself.................
Aiding and abetting the army which is invading USA.
Why would that be suspicious? The BMW could have been well used when he bought it and even if was new or almost new, active duty personnel have long been able to finance spiffy rides. I mean when your room and board and three squares a day are provided at no extra cost, you can afford a hefty monthly note on the short of your choice.
All I could afford as an E3 was a Pinto!.........
Wow, this story about ACTIVE DUTY Marines rates a story ...
Where is the story and arrest of the Politicians doing the exact same thing?
Hopefully their status as ‘Congress Critters’ doesn’t grant them immunity....
Even if granted immunity the House & Senate should have censured and possibly move to have all recalled or at least relieve them of ALL duties including committee membership.
If the Marines are breaking the law(YES, I know they are) then the pols who definitely should know better—I mean they must be geniuses to be pols, right?— are really breaking it.
Just had to correct the title
The entire article is dripping with bleeding heart sentiment.
Fyi.. my active duty son has money deducted monthly for his use of the chow hall.
Hmmm ... Dumb and Dumber.
That's interesting. In my day, a subsistence allowance was added if a service member was not using the chowhall. It wasn't deducted if he was using it.
20 years in Leavenworth making big rocks into tiny ones sounds like a fair sentence.
You’re absolutely correct. I had way more expendable money when I was an E-5 living in the barracks and eating at the mess hall than I was as an E-7, married and living in a 900 sq’ house. Way more.
Well that sucks. I left active duty in late 1971. I can’t imagine an all volunteer coed military.
Breakfast and lunch were free, but we had to pay for dinner when I was active. I usually didn’t eat dinner on base.
I was an E-3 in the summer of ‘69 when I bought a ‘67 Triumph GT6 a day after returning to home port in San Diego. A year and a half later I was an E-4 and bought a brand new BMW 2002 a day after getting back from another West Pac cruise. It cost me $3,800 cash. But since we got lots of combat pay tax-free, it was no big deal.
Fixed it.
There were two guys in my company that came from wealthy families. One drove a Triumph Stag, and the other drove a Saab Sonnet..............
